Firemen.. 'indispensable foot soldiers'.

The funny thing about firemen is,
night and day they are always firemen.. Gregory Widen.

Is there a rule in the fireman's handbook that apart from being brave and dedicated they must also be fit and good looking.. you might remember my last encounter with a fireman in the city, hot stuff! Much more seriously, seeing the horrific scenes of the fire in a residential tower in London yesterday highlights the ferocious danger men and women firefighters around the world put their lives in every day. In the words of Maya Angelou 'how important it is for us to recognize and celebrate our heroes and she-roes'! Happy Thursday, take care and stay safe..

  3. I do remember those "hot" firemen you found a few years ago. I had just finished looking at some online photos from the London fire before I came over to your site. That is one horrific scene. They really are very brave and hard working men and women.
I have a little fireman story for you. When I was working temporarily in Chicago, I lived in a high-rise. One night I was cooking dinner for friends and had a roast in the oven. The grease spatter created some smoke in my oven and caused the smoke alarm to go off. I called downstairs to let them know that nothing was wrong so they shut off the alarm but about 5 minutes later I had two big, good looking firemen knocking at my door. They arrived in full protective suits. They told me that fires in a high-rise are a serious situation and even though I had the building maintenance people turn off the alarm, they were obliged to make sure there was really no fire. Dedicated girls and boys for sure!

  4. You are so right. I think our firefighters and EMT people are our unsung heroes. Not everyone of them is a hero, of course, but some are, and all of them are asked to put their lives on the line if necessary.

  5. So agree, PDP. Unsung heros and she-roes.

  7. They are amazing. The fire in our capital is simply horrifying - the fire brigade were on site within 6 minutes and have had people right at the top of the building searching for survivors. Another heartbreaking event. A timely reminder, Grace, of what we owe these people, all over the world.

  9. I got a text about that fire last night so I followed the news during the night, absolutely horrible. My dad was a volunteer fire-fighter for 25 years. And he was scared of heights!

  10. I've always been thankful and honor firefighters and police officers as well, and now that my son is a firefighter I've discovered so much more! It is a 24 hour job!

  12. There is something about firefighters and their looks. Maybe it is more in our heads. Wouldn't they be the ultimate protectors.

  13. You are so right Grace. They really are heroes. The fire in London was truly horrific and it was so sad to learn that the tenants had been trying to have something done about the dangerous conditions in the building for so long.

  14. Nice to know they're loved the world over. My heart's been known to go pitter pat around fire guys...
(Ok, I'll take another look at the lilies but I can't get there for a couple of days. I bet they'll wait for me!)

  16. A fire is very terrifying to see, I once saw one in Amsterdam, couldn't stay to look at it. To see someone's belongings are destroyed in such a short time by the fire is terrible. I have great respect for firefighters who risk their lives every time.

  19. London has no luck these days...
Oh, so they have the calendar every year? Can you get me one for 2019, Grace? Ingo wants to come by around Australia day, a bit too late to grab one myself.
(And you can believe me I´m more than happy that Ingo is out due to his age. Everytime the siren went I was so afraid! I really respect firemen highly but I cannot understand their wifes/partners.)

  20. Firefighters and others that risk their lives to protect all of us are the real heroes, unfortunately "unsung heroes", while sadly film, tv and sports stars are the ones everyone looks up to...

  22. The only job I miss is Firefighter. I ran out of an old house that was built in 1852 and originally had a steamer and 4 horses. The stables were downstairs below our bunk room behind where the steamer was kept. All of that was converted when the pumpers were mechanized. The steamer is in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania's William Penn Museum with the hand pumper from the tiny mining town where I grew-up. My Great-grandfather was one of the founders of that fire department and its first Fire Chief.
