Stay calm and slowly walk away!

Walking around Herdsman Lake yesterday when P touched my arm and said quietly 'don't put your foot down'. There directly where my foot would have stepped.. a tiger snake! I have seen the sign below so many times without really taking much notice, it's only the second time I've seen a tiger snake, one of the most venomous snakes in the world, and certainly have never come this close to being bitten by one. Apparently they are in abundance around the lake, as you can see here. It didn't stop me whipping around from a safe distance and taking a quick shot as it slithered away into the bush.. quite sizable it was! Will definitely take more care in the future :) Happy Tuesday, take care and stay safe..

  1. I think that would probably be the last time I went for a walk there, Grace!! Scary!

  2. That was an added feature of California: rattle snakes in the neighborhood! I became adept at the snake shuffle, making noise, not stepping over an obstacle sight unseen for fear of coming down on one! Glad to be back in Hawaii where our only snake is a small, blind worm-looking thing. All others illegal outside of the zoo. We watched Hurricane Douglas all week, especially yesterday as it miraculously passed at finger-tip distance! As you know, it might have turned suddenly as they do! Even in a pandemic one can feel relief. Of course we're working and hoping for the biggest relief of all AFTER US election day!

    1. And yes, we both saw snakes on the property! [though not rattlers I think]

  3. Neat snake. Is it poisonous?

The snake sign reminds me of Florida's alligator signs where even in the city one must watch for snakes and gators.

  6. I don't care for those slithering snakes at all but you took a very nice image of it.

  7. Oh my, that's a little too close for comfort. My heart would have been pounding a bit.

  8. I'm pleased I read this in the morning and hopefully I will forget about it before bed time.

  9. Dearest Grace,
Wow, that Tiger Snake being one of the most venomous ones is something to heed! Love your photo, I've managed to capture some here on camera, either video or photo. As long as they don't attack and bite, any snake bite can be painful and nasty, aside from being venomous.
Thanks for sharing and good for your P, to gently warning you in time!
    Hugs,
    Mariette

  10. So glad P was there to save you from a terrible snake bite. Glad you got the photo. I might recommend walking somewhere else in the future. Since you got a photograph it shows how dedicated you are to your art.

  12. That's one aspect of the natural world I can do without on my walks. Luckily we have only two kinds of snake in the UK and only one of those is venomous - and I think it's some years since anyone actually died from being bitten by one.

  13. Hello Grace,
That's not the right place to go for a walk by night...brrr...!!
That must be so special. Your picture is the proof that the snakes are really there.

    Greetings, Marco

  14. Oh, my, those tech-guys.
I read somewhere people do not get "do not", "no"... glad you´re not as dumb as me, Grace!
Ingo said: "do NOT look to the left!" I sure did. Stomped the poor man down to get out of the car, in my underwear, without glasses as your darn Aussie-moths are HUGE!!!
    OK, no danger just "EEEEEK!".
Nah. WillI visit you again?! Dunno! ;-)

  15. So glad that you were quick enough to take a photo. When we had our caravan in RSA walking back to it in the evening was always a bit scary. The Puff Adders used to lie on the paths late afternoon as the ground was still warm though it was cooling off in temperature. Not the ideal guy to stand on either! Stay safe and have a good week. Diane

  16. I've luckily never come across a snake yet, but it would put me off going there for sure Grace!

  18. Ok I would not let a mere snake put me off walking but am always in awe when I encounter one and give the a wide berth. But what on earth is a snake doing being out and about in winter.
