Oops! Not my day.

After a coffee on Tuesday in Leederville I did something I have never done before! I forgot that my camera was on my lap and stood up.. et voilà, quelle tragédie! My camera with lens extended fell to the floor. I'm lucky that the actual camera wasn't damaged but take a look at my very favourite wide-angle lens! If the barrel had been in and locked it would have survived but I had just taken the shot below..

...and just after, a wee bit skewed! Anyone who uses a camera in the Olympus OM-D range will know that this wide-angle lens is super brilliant.. it's my go to lens in so many situations. The bad news is that to replace it new would set me back about $700, the good news I think I can have it repaired for much less.. fingers crossed. Don't you hate it when you do silly things like this! Happy Thursday, take care and stay safe.. P.s. you might not be interested but I felt the need to share 😊

  1. That not good, mind you I nearly dropped one off the side of a building once, it landed on the scaffolding I was stolen on and rolled to the stop. If it haddent stopped but wash a 4 meter drop. Hope you get it fixed they are expensive

  7. I know nothing about lenses other than I like them, but I'd guess it can be repaired at much less than $700. And you shouldn't feel bad. If I don't drop something, spill something, run into something, etc., at least once a day, well something's wrong and I get terribly worried. Best of luck with the lens.

  8. Wow, I can't imagine your first thoughts when it happened. I know what my words would have been had it been me. :) Hopefully you can get it fixed for a reasonable price. Good luck.

  9. Unfortunate, but good to know you can be as clumsy as everyone else.

  10. Hey Grace the saving grace is Oly has a great customer service/repair department. Very sad to hear though, that you broke your lens. Same can happen with any lens. It just seems that digital is so much more fragile than real photography. I know my digital imaging gear would not have survived much of my work in the fire service or news assignments. I bet you never dropped a lens off a 100 foot ladder truck or out of the tail of a C5B. That 9mm-18mm is a great street photography lens (as you already know) I use a 12mm & 17mm, both primes.

  12. Sorry to hear of the damage to the lens. Hope it can be successfully repaired. I dropped a camera off the top of a grandstands once. It hit the foot board and then fell about 30 feet to the ground bouncing off supports all the way. The camera was fine, but the lens was never the same again. Fortunately it was a telephoto lens of no great loss. But it still bothered me that I dropped the camera.

  17. So sorry! I hope it can be repaired as good as new. (I bought drops & spills insurance for my latest camera & big lens. I've had too many close calls.)

  27. I sure hope it can be fixed. You reminded me that about 10 years ago I bought a new macro lens for my old camera and on the same day I took it home, I went for a walk, slipped on something slick and fell with camera in hand. I was terrified that I had damaged the camera and lens. They were okay but, I ended up pulling a muscle in my leg while tying to keep it from hitting the ground. Luckily, it healed rather quickly.

  28. We ALL know how you feel, poor Grace. Our camera is like a part of us and it hurts when it breaks.
    Good luck with the repair.

  30. Sorry about your lens. While we were in Bordeaux I fell down a step with camera and wide angle lens around my neck. Natural reaction I covered the camera with my hand to protect it and forgot about myseld. No skin on the back of my hand and a pretty horrible looking knee minus a lot of skin as well. Luckily a pharmacy close by patched me up for free and the hand saved the camera!!! Keep well Diane

  31. This is a misfortune for the photographer. I always fear the fall of the camera. Perhaps it eventually ended well.🤔
