NAIDOC Week celebrations 'are held across Australia each July to
celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres
Strait Islander peoples.' You can read about the history of NAIDOC (National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observation Committee) HERE. Each year a theme is chosen to reflect the important issues and events for NAIDOC Week, the 2021 theme is 'Heal Country'. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists were invited to submit artworks for this year's National NAIDOC Poster Competition. Gubbi Gubbi artist Maggie Jean Douglas won and above is her stunning work titled 'Care for Country'. Aboriginal art is not only intricately beautiful it tells the story of their journey also. I am hoping though that next year they roll the posters instead of folding them, could not get rid of the fold mark! Hoping to visit some of the NAIDOC events over the weekend. Happy Thursday, take care and stay safe..
Beautiful poster.
ReplyDeleteThe poster looks looks very similar to mosaics from Peru or Mexico. I wonder how they relate to the Aboriginal people of Australia.
