Walking down Hay Street into the city yesterday, as always admiring two of my favourite Perth Art Deco buildings on the corner of Hay and William St. it occurred to me that I might not have actually shown them before.. my bad! Above on the right the Gledden Building built in 1938, the vertical emphasis inspired by skyscrapers in New York and Chicago, funnily enough every time I see this building it does make me think of Chicago :) Below on the opposite corner, built in 1923 the Walsh's Building formerly the 'Economic Store Building'. What is it about Art Deco that conjures up images of luxury, glamour and elegant times, do you feel it too or is it just me :) Happy Thursday, take care and stay safe...
They're beautiful! It's an architectural style that certainly appeals to me.
ReplyDeleteWonderful buildings and cityscape, G!
ReplyDeleteYes I do! I wonder if it's the way that Art Deco was depicted in movies. It always was depicted so elegantly and only the rich seemed to be surrounded by it. It's funny that you said that building makes you think of Chicago. That was my first thought when I saw the photo. Probably because so many old Chicago buildings have that type of tower on them.
ReplyDeleteI do feel it too and thanks for the photos. These are grand and glorious buildings. I think you'll find similar buildings not only in Chicago but in other midwestern cities such as Minneapolis, Des Moines, Omaha, etc.
ReplyDeleteI agree Grace, these are grand buildings!
ReplyDeleteThese building designs offer an impressive welcome to the city corner.
ReplyDelete...you are fortunate to have such lovely Art Deco buildings.
ReplyDeleteIndeed luxury and wealth is what they speak off. Good to see.
ReplyDeleteI did find however in London such buildings did not always offer large rooms inside when flats, it was the look that mattered.
I feel it too, Grace! I love the movies set in that era and that is one reason I really like the Poirot films - his apartment is so wonderful!
ReplyDeleteArt Deco buildings are really cool. I love the style and most black and white films from the 1940s-50s had their sets based around art deco style buildings.
ReplyDeleteArt Deco buildings always remind me of Hercule Poirot. :)
ReplyDeleteI love the Gledden building. How advanced was Perth in 1938 when that was erected!
ReplyDeleteVery nice to see those grand old buildings. Your city is also much cleaner than most of the cities in the USA.
ReplyDeleteTu es une infatigable et ardente guide de ta ville. Merci.
ReplyDeleteThis cityscape looks very appealing. A lot of cities I see don't make me feel that way!
ReplyDeleteThey are beautiful and elegant buildings Grace
ReplyDeleteBeautiful buildings, Great clicks.
ReplyDeleteVery pretty buildings Grace and so well maintained, a joy to look at. Much nicer than a bathtub :)
ReplyDeleteI always love some art deco architecture. I'm still waiting for the blue skies though!
ReplyDeleteThey are beautiful indeed, Grace!
ReplyDeleteThese are great looking buildings.
ReplyDeleteAll the best Jan
They are both beautiful buildings. Your photos are also beautiful Grace.
ReplyDeleteSuch fine buildings, especially the Gledden building. Art Deco was one of my favorite architectural periods. There is a lot in Miami Beach. Naples is too young, so there is none here.
