A Gift From Greece..

Can you see/feel the heat in the above shot? Summer is having it's last hurrah! It's been a scorcher of a week with temps 36/39C.. always happens at the beginning of autumn, thank heavens a cooler week coming up. The plane trees here are not just any plane trees. They were grown from cuttings from the Tree of Hippocrates on the island of Cos. The tree under which according to legend Hippocrates taught his pupils the art of medicine. A gift from the Government of Greece to the doctors and medical students of WA. They sit in a small garden in the grounds of Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, a teaching hospital in Nedlands. Seeds or cuttings from the tree have been spread all around the world.. it was lovely to think that Perth, the world's most isolated city was not forgotten. Happy Wednesday, take care and stay safe..

  3. How cool is that? But I think they should be called Hippocratic trees and med students should take the Hippocratic Oath standing under these trees. Well, it could work. Yes, it could. Oh, stop. Now you're just making fun of me. :))

  4. We recently moved and have settled well into our new home.

The weather today was glorious so we had a nice walk around the local area ... must take my camera next time! It was very spring-like.

    Hope you are well

    All the best Jan

  5. They are one of my favorite trees and what a nice story that is about the origin of those ones, Grace!

  6. I see we have a 35 degree day on the way. Although we have a had a relatively mild summer, some of our plane trees are looking very stressed and are dropping massive amounts of leaves. Perhaps it is water they need. They haven't been getting any of that. They are very good trees for cities.

  8. Heritage trees like that are absolutely precious. But oh, that heat. I don't envy you a bit. (Again I agree with your comments. We're in a "development for dollars" situation. I don't think it was a mistake that local residents weren't recruited for the planning process.)

  10. I see these trees all over France...and especially notice them when they are trimmed in the Fall. Hopefully it has cooled off a bit.

  11. The trees probably love the heat, perhaps it reminds them of Greece.
