Newest arrival at Perth Zoo.. Seeing spots!

We arrived at the Perth Zoo as it opened yesterday to take some shots of the baby giraffe born on March 7th only making her first public appearance a week ago.. adorable! Giraffes really are the most wonderful creatures. The new baby, as yet unnamed, is the offspring of fifteen year old dad Armani and eight year old mum Kitoto (interesting read) who was brought over from Sydney's Taronga Zoo in November 2016 to join Perth Zoo's breeding program. The gestation period for giraffes is fifteen months, so you could say that it was a whirlwind romance :)

Below with proud dad Armani. Such a joy to see the high spirits of the new arrival as it snuggled and cavorted around the enclosure. Apparently Ellie the other female giraffe had her nose put out of joint for a short while with the new arrival but there was no sign of that here. The giraffe in Africa has slipped quietly onto the endangered species list, habitat destruction and poaching being the cause.. shocking! I took so many shots I was seeing spots before my eyes before I edited the shots here, and of course it would have been helpful if I had remembered my long lens :) next time! Happy Friday and Easter weekend, take care and stay safe..P.s. big catch up today!

  1. Certainly a whirlwind romance. Lovely photos of one of the most graceful of wild animals. Hope all is well and that you have a good Easter Diane

  3. What extraordinary creatures they are - you couldn't design anything as strange. Strange but beautiful.

  5. Adorable! I saw a photo recently of a big game hunter with a giraffe as a trophy. Unbelievable!

  6. Love these creatures. A few years ago we have several giraffes at Silver Springs and it was always fun to watch them walk in and out of a very tall entrance. That baby is so sweet. Don't tell dTrumpf or his offspring or they're likely to head to Perth to hunt!

One thing about giraffes, though, is they spit. They would come right up in front of people trying to feed them something and spit in the face of those people. They tried to get me a couple of times, but I stayed back beyond their reach!

  7. Giraffes are wonderful. I have only met a few up close and personal (at the Colorado Spring zoo), and found them to be friendly and gentle. So sad they are now endangered. Great photos of this baby giraffe.

  8. How adorable. I can't remember ever seeing a baby giraffe in person. You made me think of the story I saw about Giraffe Manor in Nairobi Kenya where the giraffe's come right up the hotels windows. Such wonderful gentle giants.

  9. Lovely animals. God invented them to keep trees trimmed. I recently read that they are not particularly devoted parents. Your photos don't indicate that.

  11. The baby is gorgeous, and so are the mum and dad. Giraffes are my grandson Isaac's very favourite animal.

  14. Awww, so beautiful, Grace!
Each time we visit: No giraffes to be seen (as you know...).
    Beautiful and so sweet!
Sad news about "the real giraffes", though!

  15. Hi again, Grace. I should have added that giraffes have a breath smell that will knock you from Perth to Sydney. But I really wanted to mention the problem you had on Kate's blog. I've found that on three or four blogs, I get my comments back with a note that I've been blocked due to some new esoteric qualification Google decided was necessary. In those cases I've asked the blogger to change their settings so I can us the Name/URL comment box. I have no idea what's going on but it's maddening!

  26. Great shots of these magnificent animals. How very sad that Africa's giraffes are now endangered.
BTW, my 8 yo granddaughter in Sydney got as her birthday gift the chance to be a Junior Keeper for a Day at Toronga Zoo. In the last few years she has become an expert on elephants.
