Approach, facade and interior.....

As you climb the hill up to St. Mary's Cathedral you get the first glimpses of the Gothic design building through the arch of an amazing Morton Bay Fig tree with branches that span right across the road, the root system which you unfortunately can't see here is enormous. St' Mary's Cathedral (history St. Mary ) has gone through three major stages of  development, the first stage 1865 - 1930, second stage 1930 - 1999 and the third stage 1999 to the present. At one point in the renovations, the entire roof structure had to be temporarily hoisted off  and then re-attached to a permanent steel structure, unfortunately you can see the steel pillars, but I guess it had to be made safe .It has quite a colourful history including  Bishops bodies being discovered under the floorboards in the aisle. If you're interested in knowing a bit more of the history the link above is very illuminating!! Happy Sunday.

  3. Beautiful place! I've always wanted to photograph the interior of a cathedral like this.

  4. That is quite a building. Yes, the steel column is unfortunate, but I agree that the first priority is keeping it up safely. Seeing that tree with orange leaves reminds me that your weather is the opposite of ours in the USA.

  5. Yes it is Jack, but somehow I don't think our winters get nearly as bad as yours, we very rarely go below minus.

It's the first time I've been in St' Mary's Keith, I was pleasantly surprised at how light and bright it was.

Thanks Rae and Randy, you just can't beat autumn colours hey.

    Thanks Deepak.

  10. Wow! I used to live not far from the cathedral (near Wellington Square) and used to go through the cathedral garden on my way to the city centre. This was in 2004, and since then I can see by your photos that the cathedral has undergone major renovations. I almost didn't recognize it, if it haden't been for the beautiful fig tree that i remember :)

  12. What a lovely old church you have beautifully photographed. There is a lot of history in this building. I was especially taken by the wonderful fall leaves in the top photo. One of the fun things about the city daily photo community is that is can be spring on one site and fall on another. I love it.

  17. The beautiful leaves reminded me that your seasons are the opposite of ours in the northern hemisphere. I wish we were heading into Fall - I'm tired of the heat already!
