All alone?

Absolutely not :) Below, ten brothers and sisters all together in a cotton-ball huddle. On a seven km walk yesterday, although it's still three weeks until official spring there were signs everywhere, the wildflowers beginning to appear along the way but sweetest of all were the family of shelducks, the day old babies adorable tiny puffballs 💚 watched over by protective parents..

There were eleven babies, I found myself counting them often to make sure they were all there, why is there always one who lags behind. Makes me a little nervous, so many predators out there that could swoop down for a tasty tiny morsel..

While the other ten hang out with mum above, the female has a white ring around the eye.. the breakaway is rounded up by dad below. Hope you don't mind the Sunday overload of cuteness.. they were too irresistible :) Yesterday was beautiful but winter returns with a vengeance today and tomorrow.. big storms predicted.. thunder, lightning the works.. snuggle time :) Happy Sunday, take care and stay safe..

  1. There is a mother mallard here who always has one to round up. Every mother has one of those youngsters...

  2. Dearest Grace,
Lovely photos of those cute forebodes of spring!
You also write in a very entertaining way, describing what you observed so well, it makes you almost feel like being there with you!
Hugs and stay cozy for the weekend.

  4. Such adorable little critters and quite the big family. That's a lot of young energy to keep in check. Those parents have their work cut out for them.

  10. There's always one rebel! Your Shelducks are very different to the bird we know by that name but every bit as beautiful.
