From Glasgow to Melbourne to Perth.....

This lovely old paddle steamer the PS Decoy was built in Glasgow and shipped to Australia in sections and assembled in Melbourne in 1878 to be utilized as a harbour tug, instead it was resold for use on inland rivers and in 1905 sailed, or should I say 'steamed'  it's way to Perth to become an excursion steamer on the Swan River. In the 1930's it was used as a houseboat and now it's berthed at the Mends St. Jetty on the South side of the Swan River and used for all sorts of functions, it is billed as a 'unique wedding experience' venue, but also popular for birthday parties, bucks/hens nights etc. I have seen some wedding photos taken aboard this old classic, especially at night with the city as a backdrop and they are absabloominfabulous!! Almost the weekend... yay!  It's been the most hectic week ever.....!

  2. It looks like we should see Bogart and Bergman on it.

So, you had a tough week? Kick back, find a glass of wine, and put your feet up.

  5. River boats conjur up different memories for me. I think of the deep south. Nowadays they've become moving casinos...but I adore the name Swan River

  11. Ce vieux bateau à aubes me rappelle ceux qui descendaient le Mississipi. Nul doute que pour un mariage, le décor est très romantique.
    Bon week-end, Gracie!

  15. Love those black swans on the water's edge, Grace. We have paddle steamers like this in various parts of our harbour. We also have one that is known as an 'island' which is really just a sea-going beer keg!

  16. You could say that thing has sailed around the world - more or less. Fascinating story and a great addition to your area.

We just heard that our daughter in Colorado got a call from one of Lois Anne's relatives who lives in East Fremantle. I had no idea where East Fremantle was so I looked it up and lo and behold its just a ways away from Perth!

For some reason I find this kind of exciting. The woman in East Fremantle is Pauline Cutting. She's a bit older than I am, I think, so is probably up in years. I believe I remember the family was involved in raising sheep - but could be mistaken. There are other relatives in other parts of Australia.

Anyway, maybe someday you'll run into Pauline and you can say "Hello" from her relatives in Ocala, Florida! :-)

  17. Lovely post! I bet it makes a gorgeous image for weddings! The only steam boat I've been on is inside Disney.

  18. You must participate in a contest for among the best blogs on the web. I will suggest this web site! Wondering where to go in 2019? Things to do has ranked as the best include a remote, idyllic island, the design capital ...
