Ore Obelisk.. The Harmony of Minerals.

WA has a rich mining history and I have wanted to show the Ore Obelisk the 'harmony of minerals' in Stirling Gardens for a while but the light never seems to be quite right. The Ore Obelisk, a symbol of the WA mining boom is 'a memorial to the State`s progress and a symbol of a decade of mineral expansion between 1960 and 1970'. If you embiggen the shot below you will see that...

...'the Ore Obelisk is really a simple mirror symbol. Mining goes on underground. To make it visible the process is turned upside down. The steel base is engraved as a 3-D production graph, and each year a current ½ in. plate is laid to keep the graph up to date. From it rises the 45ft oil drill pipe. It threads through the 15 ores and at its peak the drill bit dramatically points upwards symbolising the ore boom spirit ‘The Sky is the Limit’. Still not the best lighting, but important to show. Happy Thursday, take care and stay safe..

  1. Having the structure behind it and blocking out the sun seems to bring out the details. Well shot, Grace!

  4. Interesting as always Grace. How would an upward shot from the prone position work? Probably not enough contrast between each ore sample! No matter, you done good :)

  7. Super the classic houses in combination with the glass tower. Reminds me of Boston.

  8. I'm very intrigued by this display since Arizona is a big mining state. This is such an interesting way to bring this information to the general public. We used to have a large "mining" museum near our state capitol but, it closed several years ago. Our biggest mining product is copper but, there are few other things mined around here too.

  9. I was able to max each photo and was able to see the sculpture more closely—very impressive. It is a wonderful teaching tool and its design is very appealing. I also noted the building behind it in the first photo. It is beautiful and impressive also. Such wonderful classic lines! Might it be the Old Courthouse as indicated on the sign on the third photo?

  17. The ore obelisk, the kangaroos, the setting - even the drinking fountains. I like them all. I'm enjoying Perth and your WA (as opposed to my WA - Washington).

  19. Turning a drill into an intriguing piece of artwork is quite a feat. This is extraordinary. The first photo with the wall of tall glass behind offers a fine backdrop.

  20. It´s always impressive, Grace. As the fact that the souvenir shops sell iron-ore jewlery so darn cheap! (Don´t tell them, though! ;-)...)
