Looking out from this very spot one hundred & forty years ago couldn't have been more different from the idyllic scene today. At first it was the blue sky, the waves rippling onto the shore, the vignettes played out between the beams that caught my eye and if you enlarge you'll see the green lighthouse on the south mole with the red lighthouse on the north mole just behind..but it's the history of this site that's so fascinating. These and a few beams under water are all that is left of the
Fremantle Long Jetty built in1873, such an interesting link and a wonderful image of the jetty c1890.. the jetty became obsolete as an importing and exporting structure when
Fremantle Harbour opened in 1897. Looking forward to seeing the many interpretations of this theme

ReplyDeleteInteresting history lesson, Grace.
ReplyDeleteA wonderful place to be looking-out from Grace and I could imagine on a roasting hot day the remains of the jetty would afford much shade to families who would then be looking out.
ReplyDeletehee hee... It is easy for those of us in the (ahem) other hemisphere to forget as we move into the winter months that you are heading into peak barbie season! :-)

ReplyDeleteGreat theme day shot.
ReplyDeleteLove the shot of the bather between the jetty piers !
ReplyDeleteI dream of seeing the sea again. I am only 9 hour (drive) away from it, and I shall go back during the summer, but it's still a long time to wait. So thank you for these beautiful blues...
ReplyDeleteYour post reminds me of the Long Wharf in Boston, Many years ago it was a major spot for goods to be shipped. Today it is gone, memorialized only in the name of the Marriott Long Wharf hotel that is located on the harbor front where the wharf used to be. It is no coincidence that the Boston Custom House is located only a block inland from the former long wharf, and it is no longer a custom house. It has now been converted into another Marriott hotel.
ReplyDeleteFabulous!!
ReplyDeleteThat's a warm and vivid past... And it is kind od a futur : this place will be the same next summer... ^^
