New years solutions to resolutions, or.. facing my nemesis!

Resolution = goal. Solution = plan to achieve goal. A solution can result in a resolution…a resolution can be the result of a solution. New Years resolution 'I AM going to conquer fear of flying'.. solution 'I am (less emphatic) going to stop thinking about falling out of the sky'!

At the airport early yesterday morning to wave goodbye for a while to my Sydney famille, I came face to face with one of my many phobias. Apart from quoting 'it's safer flying than driving on the roads these days' has anyone with the same phobia found a successful way to conquer this fear? If so, please share, I'm going to have to face my nemesis in four months and a solution to my resolution would be most welcome. Happy Monday, take care and stay safe...p.s. please bear with me while I catch up :)

  1. ...many fears are not rational. I have several.

  2. In this country the airlines do special courses to help you overcome the fear of flying. It's not something I suffer from so I've no personal exerience to draw on though. It must be difficult when you family live so far away.

  3. I don't have a fear of it, though sometimes it is unpleasant! I suggest a nice glass of Bourbon on the flight :)

  4. Good for you for focusing on overcoming your fear! Mind over matter. Best wishes....I'll look forward to hearing how it goes.

  5. happy new year grace...i have the same fear...during our whole flight if i feel the least bit of turbulance i immediately look at the flight attendants and others on the flight to see the expressions on their faces to see if it's just me or something we are all worried about lol...most of the time it's just me...we can do this!

  6. Have a great New Year, Grace. Good for you to work on conquering your phobias. Just remember, flying is by far the safest way you can travel. Let the flight crew worry about flying the plane. They are professionals, and it is their job. Your job as passenger is to relax and enjoy yourself. Pay no attention to bumps or movement of the plane. Air is just like water, sometimes smooth and sometimes bumpy, but planes fly through almost anything. I have been flying as pilot and passenger for over 60 years, so I know something about this.

  7. To answer your question about cold and frost. No, it is not necessarily colder. This thick frost occurs whenever it is below freezing with a heavy fog. The fog freezes on everything it touches. It can snow at any below freezing temperature.

  8. Commercial flying is a pain. Have some fun and go up with a respected aerobatic pilot. You'll have the flight of your life. If you want calm, go for a sail plane ride. I love small to mid-size aircraft, but loath flying commercial. Kind of like freedom (general aviation) vs. (commercial aviation) a sardine can or a flying cattle car.

  9. I used to love to fly, but all of the very necessary security procedures took all of the fun out of it!

  10. A combination of talk therapy and hypnotherapy has been very helpful for me with my trypanophobia (fear of hypodermic needles). You can do it!!! :)

  11. I'm with Norma, commenting above. I haven't gotten on a plane since 2001 when TSA entered the picture. Not only that, services to passengers have been cut back and now they are being charged for what used to be free services like meals, baggage check, etc. Planes are also more crowded. I'm perfectly content to stay home now. I prefer road trips to planes.

  12. I am afraid I can't help you, I love flying and never think of falling down. I think it is magical to be all over the world in another place in such a short time. The only thing I don't like are the security checks nowadays, that strangers touch you body and see you as a suspect.

  13. Ha! I can guarantee you that it's a heck of a lot safer to fly than to drive here in the DMV. :-)

  14. I feel sorry for you. I used to be scared when younger but just doing it over and over and over again seemed to fix my problem. My sister in law had/has it really bad. When my brother was alive they wouldn't fly from London to Australia to visit us. They didn't fly anywhere for holidays. They would go by ship or train. However, since my brother died in 2009 my SIL has had to overcome her fear because she wants to spend time with her sons. One lives in Australia and one lives in St Lucia, West Indies. She has been to Australia twice now and she flies 3 or 4 times a year to St Lucia. I can ask her to write to you if you like. I'm not sure how she did it. I think she may have tried hypnosis but not sure.

  15. Listen to some soothing music or read a book, that works for me. I only get nervous when there is turbulence but then again so does everyone else.

  17. I'm the odd one that has a terrible fear of heights but love to fly. I can't walk down steps where you can see the ground below through slats and yet love to watch the world below from a plane window. Maybe if someone has an answer for flying phobia it may help my height fears. Happy New Year to you.

  18. Hey daftie you are more likely to die in the kitchen than in the air!
Lovely shots of the important things, and of the kids too....

  19. Love your shots as usual, G. I wish you the freedom to fly where you will. But hope you will always perch with us here. <3

  20. These are great shots from the airport. I never had a fear of flying so I don't think I can help with a solution. I do hate those long haul flights but, that's mostly because of the discomfort of sitting in those tiny seats for all that time not any particular fear.

  21. Always make sure you have a loved one right beside helps me heaps, Grace. Helps better than alcohol though maybe that makes it a tad easier, too. And a good movie!

  22. As has been mentioned there are or were courses to overcome the fear of flying. While alcohol might help, or better still a sedative, it might make it worse if you don't feel 100% in control. No easy answer but perhaps repetition is the way. My fear is of airports and chaos within.

  23. Can't help either as I love flying, just wish "cattle class" would be more comfortable on long flights. I've heard the courses to conquer fear of flying actually help, give them a try Grace.

  24. Happy New Year Grace! I can completely understand where you are coming from, as a very nervous flyer myself! I just have to remind myself the whole flight that the destination is worth the journey. As others have mentioned, there are courses offered by some airlines to help nervous flyers overcome their fear, so perhaps there's something on offer by Qantas?
All the best of luck and I really hope you do get to conquer that fear this year...the rest of the world awaits you :-)

  25. I would suggest taking the most fascinating book you can find and don't take your eyes or mind off of it.

  26. Sometimes there is no easy answer to overcome our fears ...
    But a course may help!

    All the best Jan
