GPO details and Unexpected Things..

Although it may have taken ten years to complete due to shortages of building material during WW1, the General Post Office has been sitting solidly in the centre of the city since it's completion in 1923, glass skyscrapers rising up all around. Next door, although only eight floors, the Albert Facey building check here (super pic) reflects the PO above alongside a newbie behind.

I like that the Christmas decorations for this old beauty, one of my favourite buildings in the city, are not over the top.. a seasonal wreath in each of the arched windows..

... and angels, wings glinting in the Perth sunshine heralding in a joyeux Noël. I remember when we first came to Perth and I was working in the city, it was such a pleasure to go into the post office, the jarrah floors and fittings were tres grande.. the floors are still there, but the modern day post office takes up very little floor space now.. I wonder what happened to those solid jarrah counter-tops!

The only deer head I'd ever consider putting up on a wall.. designed in Italy, manufactured in Germany from recycled MDF and sold through MIHO Unexpected Things Home Decor.. I might have to find a spot :) More 'unexpected' things tomorrow, one in particular that I'm sure would not be found in 'ye olde England' :) Happy Thursday, take care and stay safe... p.s. you weren't expecting that were you :)

  1. I too am a fan of the 20th century buildings (I grew up cleaning them with my dad's cleaning service)

You have a great spirit! Feeling it and appreciating you, G!

  4. Superb photos of this superb structure. They don't make 'em like that anymore. It reminds me of the old post office in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

  5. Reminds me of how overrun my local post office has been since about a week or two ago. 'Tis the season. :-)

  10. the holiday decorations on the post office are perfect and the unexpected things are so fun. That post office building is beautiful. Your description of the inside make me think about the old post office my home town in Illinois. When I was a kid, I loved going there and hearing the echo of my shoes on the floor in such a grand a huge space.

  22. Again I love how in Perth old and new architecture is mixed so well! But for once I can surprise you, Grace! Those colorful kitsch-items made it´s way here in (our) spring already, March or May.
    So ugly-beautiful :-)
