The Colonial Lock-up.....!

There are so many heritage listed buildings in Guildford that Guildford itself is heritage listed :) After lunch at the Rose & Crown, walking up Meadows St. we passed the Post Office, the Mechanic's Institute and the Colonial Gaol all within metres of each other and all...heritage listed! The bell that hangs here is an 1865 distress bell from Docklands-Glasgow, replacing Guildford's 1855 curfew bell which was stolen in 1999..that's a little cheeky don't you think, stealing the bell from a gaol, rogues :) The bell was rung at 10pm nightly to warn 'ticket of leave' convicts to be off the streets or return to the convict depot which back then was a stones throw away on the site that the post office was built on in 1897. I'm seriously confusing myself right now with all these dates, enough already! Happy Thursday (I just had to check that fact haha!) ..take care and stay safe.....

  2. Fun reading about Guildford. What a nice day out you had. Weather looks good too. It does make me laugh that the bell was stolen.

  3. I always enjoy reading about the history of different places! I love the shadow of the bell and it does seem to be giving a warning -- shape up or swing!!! Hope your week is going well! Enjoy!

  6. That is fascinating, love hearing these little tales:) Wonderful sounding stroll...I wonder where the stolen bell is now? (And between recent travel and holidays, I'm pretty confused about dates myself!)

  7. Hmmm: don't you think it looks almost like a chapel with the bell shadow almost looking like a cross? Or is it just me? Very interesting post!

  9. Ah! In this area there are many ecualiptos brought from Australia, because there is a paper-making factory.

  11. Very tempting stone throwing target for the local yoof. Re the dates, non writers probably don't appreciate how much time goes into getting dates and appropriate links correct. I do.

  15. It is such a shame that petty thieves take it upon themselves to whisk away part of our heritage. Thanks for sharing your adventure.
