Light at the end of the tunnel.....!!

Since the tragic death of Princess Dianne in 1997 in the Pont de l'Alma road tunnel, I have a totally irrational fear of driving through tunnels, which added to my fear of heights, fear of small spaces, fear of deep water and believe it or not bike helmet phobia, make me a perfect candidate for a Woody Allen movie..! We only have one Freeway tunnel in Perth, the Graham Farmer Tunnel (Graham Farmer Tunnel) which links East and West Perth bypassing the central City area, it's a small tunnel by world standards being only 1.6km long. Here's the thing, mon amie Marie lives in Guildford, and to visit I tend to take a very much longer route to avoid using the Tunnel, which would cut my trip by at least twenty minutes, so in an attempt to cut my phobias by one, I have been through the tunnel, although as you've probably guessed as I took the picture, I wasn't driving. When asked when I might go it alone...any day now.....!!

  2. this is a tough one. it's so easy for a fear like that to take hold and so hard to shake it once it's got its teeth in you. but you are a brave and intrepid adventurer and you will triumph over this...or else put a book-on-tape in your car cd player and go the long way around.

  3. Grace, this is not you. I have you pegged as strong and fearless. Now, go face those fears (except for fear of heights, which I am getting increasingly these days) and go face them!

  4. First, that's a very fine picture. Second, under no circumstances go through the St. Gothard's Tunnel in Switzerland. It's 16.4 kn long and packed with huge trucks, or lorries if you prefer. Freaked me out.

  5. I am with you on the deep water. That's why I love living in the desert southwest and rarely visit the ocean. Wonderful photo.

  8. Tunnels are relatively safer, at least there people can't hit your car from the sides!

  9. I'm with you Grace. We have a tunnel under the Yarra River which I avoid if I can. The leaking water from above doesn't fill me with confidence.

  10. I like tunnel shots more than being in them. But don't worry, I will not take your role in the Allen movie. Very funny, Grace! :-)))

  12. A Woody Allen movie, huh? That made me laugh. We also have an inner city tunnel that I have to travel through quite often. No problems doing it but, trucks hauling hazardous materials are not allowed to use it so that gives some sense of confidence.

  20. I agree with Jack in that I envision you as a strong woman who will be able to overcome and work through these fears/phobias. My money is on you.

Virginia really is afraid of snakes... I know!
