Perth Arena ll, le grand pineapple.....!

Well from some angles it's more 'grand' than others. From this position above as it stands alone and in relation to the passers-by the 10 metre high Totem created by Perth born artist Geoffrey Drake-Brockman is and does look tres grand, but below with the enormous structure of the arena in the background it proves without doubt that size is relative! I'm very much looking forward to seeing it in the evening when it projects laser beams onto the side of the arena which will be visible from several spots in the city, our very own 'La Tour Eiffel' .. Oh la! la! a little (?) less chic but a lot more funky. The Totem has had a fair amount of negativity since going up, but personally I think it's fun and sits in perfect harmony with the equally 'out there' design of the arena oui!  We're going inside tomorrow, so see you in there, hope your week has started well, take care and stay safe.....

  3. Super funky and very fun - I love the architecture and feel, so well-captured here! Looking forward to the inside glimpse:)

(It's so sad to see trees uprooted and destroyed, isn't it? I'm sure your garden is beautiful again, though not the same without your favorite tree.)

  4. The funky pineapple seems to complement the funky arena quite nicely! You'll have to show us a night shot with the lasers. Hope all's well in your corner of the world.

  7. I like it and especially its setting against the arena. Who was the architect - did I miss that?

  8. I'd like to see that myself! And isn't it great, that no matter what a piece like this might be officially named, the locals always assign one of their own. And usually a more apt one!

  10. The size and shape fit the arena well, and the color offsets the blues. And laser show to come - nice!

  11. The laser beam show should be spectacular indeed.

  12. To me it looks very modern and the structure seems to be the ring on the finger of the new bride. I like the idea of the laser light show too.

  14. As a stand alone piece, I can see why people wouldn't like it but second photo gives the sculpture some context.

  15. Oh my god, that's one of those modern hysterical buildings with everything asymmetric. I have seen such buildings by Gehrie in Bilbao and Germany. And then we put a weird totem in front of it. Poor Perth.

  17. I can't imagine the pineapple drew boos when up against that arena. And you're right Grace, they play well together.

  20. Maybe I'll just suspend judgment and see how the good people of Perth respond to it after it has been around for a while. I wonder if the Sydney Opera House was beloved from the first day . . .

  21. It does have a totemic look about it which makes it look like something that landed in the wrong country. Not even sure it impresses me as a pineapple, but I do love the way people instantly assign their own characterisation to artworks.

  22. They certainly are interesting structures and I can see why there has been a lot of complaints. But it's different, attracts attention, and I like it!

  23. I like it. It echos the design of the building perfectly.

  26. Hmmmm both architect and 'artist' require psychiatric help. Both however have made a lot of cash however.......

  27. Crazy and fun architecture! With those angles, the interior spaces should be just as interesting.

  29. Wow! That's all very modern. Not sure I like it, but maybe it would grow on me if I lived there. :)

  30. I hope you take photos of it when it's lit up. I think it matches the style of the arena so therefore is appropriate,

  31. i think the pineapple is leaning toward the arena ... maybe it feels its safer closer .. love stuff like this .. the Chicago 'Bean' which they insist is a 'cloud' .. love it

I'm kinda paranoid about losing everything I've worked hard on.
    Any recommendations?
