Καλή Παρασκευή.....

I went to see a French movie at Cinema Paradiso in Northbridge yesterday called The Intouchables, if I was a critic I'd give it 11 out of 10 stars for entertainment value and recommend it as a 'must see', it was hilarious! On the way back to the car I stopped to take a few shots of the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of St Constantine & Helen on Parker Street. Back in 1911 the Commonwealth Census numbered the Greek community in WA at 323 males and 12 females, a small group who, finding the conditions hostile and very different from their homeland, took refuge in their religion. This church built in the Byzantine style, after much community fundraising, was consecrated in April 1937 and later proclaimed a cathedral in May 1972. I'm happy to say the Greek community in 2012 is happily flourishing in Perth and all are benefiting from the exchange of culture and traditions. Happy Friday, hope it's a good one, take care.....

  2. It truly astounds me what some of these small church groups could accomplish back in hose days in order to get a church built! This one is huge!

I blush. I'm probably one of the rare French people who hasn't yet seen that film...

  9. Okay, I read the first line and then thought that doesn't look like a theater. So, I glad to find out I was right. It's a lovely brick building and I think will stand the test of time. I've not heard of the movie, unfortunately, but I'll keep looking for it. I like hilarious!

  11. Five minutes out of bed and not a sip of coffee taken. Are my specs dirty? The subject line is weird. It's not even French. Slowly the brain makes the connection between the written word and the images. Now where are those characters on my keyboard. I can't see them.

  15. Beautiful church, nicely photographed. The movie you described is called The Intouchables in the USA. About a quadriplegic and his unexpected caregiver? Fabulous movie.

And if you were one of those early Greek women and couldn't get a date, how bad would you have felt? Of course, not getting dates is certainly a phenomenon that you are not familiar with, right?

  19. Interesting looking building. That does sound like a good movie. The Helen Hunt one (The Sessions?) looks good as well.

  23. Very bold lines in this Church. I guess it is meant to convey the strength in religion. I have also heard good reviews of The Intouchables from other sources. Glad you enjoyed it too.

  27. Somehow I don't usually equate red brick with Greek Orthodox style. But I certainly like it! (But I like most anything that's red. ;))

  28. Great looking church. Very multicultural to my eyes, mixing the Greek architectural style with Australian building material of red bricks.

  29. This looks like a huge church. I have been to several small Greek churches on several greek islands.
What I like about them, is not only the beauty, but they are open, and people pop in on their way to work etc.
    It looks so common there.
