Pylons and peer pressure.....

These pylons stretching two to three hundred meters out to sea off the beach at North Coogee are all that remains of Robb Jetty, built in the late 1800's to accommodate the ships arriving from the Kimberleys with their cargo of live cattle for the abattoir. The Robb Jetty Abattoir was closed in 1994, the jetty dismantled in the 1960's, these days it's a popular dive site....
This is a close up of the sculpture by Tony Jones you can see offshore in the first shot. Quite a story to this one. C.Y. O'Connor a brilliant man responsible for many innovative ideas in the early development of WA, but a man who drew a lot of criticism from the press, politicians and his peers. On the 10th March 1902 he had had enough, he mounted his horse, rode out into the ocean here on North Coogee beach and shot himself. The peer pressure problem has been going on since forever it seems! Don't do anything you don't want to today, take care and stay safe.....p.s. methinks the birds and barnacles love this one!!

  1. The peer pressure problem is with us till eternity, but I do like the idea of the sculpture. By the look of those barnacles, you took these at a very low tide.

  2. Oh, how true!! I'm not sure we'll ever see the end of peer pressure and that is SO sad!! However, it is a wonderful sculpture. Hope your week is going well, Grace!! Take care!

  3. Looks like that old pier felt some pressure, too. And that's real pier pressure. Love the sculpture! And the water. And the pylons. And the bird. I can smell the ocean smell!

  7. Peer pressure certainly follows us around everywhere during our life time. Bonza sculpture to.

  8. There's something poignant about remains of now-gone places - to think of all those lives that passed through... The sculpture is sad but fascinating (wow, the Wikipedia info on O'Connor's death is interesting). The sculptor also has some other nice work. Love the layers of stories and art/history lessons here! ps Glad you enjoyed the kooky ukulele orchestra sound effects!:)

  9. This is cool. It looks like a pic from Lord of the Rings. Ancient structures found in waters that state "Once this place was important." I think the older we get, the harder life becomes with all the silly routine things we have to do.

  10. A thoughtful mean to measure time and life indeed. Yes, there's a lot of pressure around. Only back in April a man shot himself in front of the Parliament over here.
I'll take much care tomorrow. Thanks. Please have a kind Thursday.

  21. One odd sculpture to be out there like that. Reminds me of a sculptor here who puts free standing rock sculptures in the Ottawa River each spring....

  22. The sculpture itself is intriguing - but then having heard the story behind it, the scene takes on a more poignant tone.
