Where's Wally?

I love coming across these little surprises! I'm pretty sure most of us have searched for Wally at some point and although not expecting to see him in Freo he was pretty easy to spot without the usual mob surrounding him. Created and published 1987 in the UK, later published in US under the name Waldo. Wally at one point even made it on to the banned book list in the US.. you really have to read why here, unbloominbelievable! I have to admit I missed the 'side-boob' in the crowd, or maybe I just wasn't looking for it. How about you, were you scandalized :) Happy Tuesday, take care and stay safe.. P.s. you should be used to my tongue-in-cheek humour by now right 😉

  1. Vote Waldo/Wally 2020. For a president who won't be in your face 24/7.

  2. Thank you, Grace, for another big laugh!
Ingo´s Dad is from Dresden (GDR) and the family (without me!) ... well... naked. Bathing. At the sea etc.
Banned because of a topless female! I remember in Darwin a sign: "no topless females" (who would do that in the agressive Australian sun anyways).

  3. I never understand why a painted breast can be dangerous for children. Americans have no sexlife I think, it is a miracle they even can make children, with there eyes shut I suppose :)

  5. Who's Wally or Waldo? The character is unfamiliar to me. So the book was banned because some moron thought he/she saw part of a breast. How stupid is that? Breasts are wonderful and should be shown more often in their lush fullness. And where would we be without boobs? Probably smaller, sicker, and less likely to care about our mothers. Sheesh! People are so dumb!

  6. According to a friend of mine this all started at Bath Blues Festival in 1969 when the announcer told the crowd that some people were looking for their friend Wally from whom they'd become separated. The crowd began to chant "Wally! Wally!" From that came the expression "What a Wally!" as popularised by Del Boy in Only Fools And Horses, and also the Where's Wally books. I have no idea if all that's true.

  7. I didn't know about Wally but of course I had heard the expression. That's funny about it photo causing offence in the US.

  8. They are sensitive folks in the States except for guns & killing which you can show. We often get TV shows from there that will bleep out minor curse words in the middle of a scene with people being tortured and shot. Very strange.

  9. And I thought "Where's Waldo" (or Wally) was just a bit of fun. Can not imagine how carefully one had to search to see the offending side of a women's breast. The Puritan are still out there, but they just need to get over it. Glad you found and photographed him ;-)

  11. Oh my gosh, we Americans really do have a horribly prudish history that I thought would have been long gone by 1990! That is just plain silly. However, your Wally is not silly at all. I like him peeking out to say "hello". Good one.
P.S. I love RedPat's comment. She is so right.

  12. This is amazing!Who could have seen that..or cared? A shopping center in Houston put up some Greek God statues that were appropriately nude. There was an enormous fuss!

  16. Ha ha. I have an interest in the crazy reasons why books get banned. I can’t imagine how any book gets past the thought police these days as there are so many competing voices saying this or that is wrong. Maybe the original Waldo books are now a collectors item.

  17. You found Wally, that's great Grace. I had to laugh at the reason for the ban in the States. With hundreds of people drawn on the page how did they find the topless woman? Lol.
