Plug. Me. In.. and drive me home!

It's the first time I've actually seen an electric car charging up! It's a Tesla Model S (click the link) a pretty amazing piece of technology. If you look at the video on the link it begins by stating 'The person in the driver's seat is only there for legal purposes. He is not doing anything, the car is driving itself.' My first thought was how on earth is he sitting there so calmly without feet and hands twitching to grab the controls, I have a few friends, you know who you are :) who do that in the car when I'm driving, goodness knows why, no really.. goodness knows why 😊 What do you think, are you ready to let the machine take over? Happy Friday, take care and stay safe..

  1. Quite a car. I've seen cars being charged, but those weren't Teslas

  2. Lots of electrically powered cars here though no driverless ones yet. These electric cars are so uiet that they scare the hell out of me when they suddenly appear alongside me when I'm cycling. I can see that self-driving vehicles would be very handy to take everyone home when the pubs close - they couldn't be any more dangerous than drunk people behind the wheel.

  3. I have no drivers licence,so it would be perfect for me. I always let me drive by others but then I can change places and lean behind while the car is driving me :))))

  5. Come to think of it, I have seen a Tesla and I have seen their charging stations around but never one charging. Self driving cars...ehhhh not sure about it.

  6. It could be weird just sitting there as the car drives you. Riders would probably sit there and critique the car's performance when it disagrees with something. I'll continue to walk and ride with friends.

  7. These are nice-looking cars. Some Teslas have had problems but I think they're working on that. Now they just have to get the price down. I like the idea of electric cars, providing they offer enough mileage per charge, but driverless cars is going a step too far. There have already been several serious accidents with driverless cars in this country. One of the problems with technology is that if it is possible, it is built or structured or put together. The real question, should we build, structure or put it together, is almost never asked and that gets us into a hell of a mess. Think atomic bombs. Think the new technology that allows Facebook, et. al., to basically learn every facet of our lives and sell that information to the highest bidder, or to use it to sway an election as was done here in 2016. There are major ethical questions that surround the introduction and use of technology but because the US and other countries are ultra-capitalistic and thus driven by profit, those questions are not even mentioned except for a few lone wolves in the wilderness. And I think it's just a matter of time before they will be arrested and put in jail for questioning the prevailing ethos and those who rule according to that ethos. Think Trump. That's the direction we're headed here.

  8. I'm a bad passenger so I don't think I'd do well sitting there calmly while the car drove itself!

  9. Self driving cars will save tens of thousands of lives, and hundreds of thousand of automotive accident injuries. Are they coming? I think they are unavoidable, but I enjoy driving my cars and I have no desire to own a self driving one myself. Driving is a skill and avocation I have cultivated over the years, so I have no desire to give that up. I will stick with my antiques.

  10. I thought it was a car that had driven off from a petrol station with the driver forgetting to remove the pump hose.

  11. I've seen quite a few electrical cars being charged. In Europe you see them a lot too. Not sure I would be comfortable letting the car drive itself, a bit scary...

  12. I never minded auto-pilot on my airplane (yep it was a bit scary at first to let the airplane fly itself), but I doubt I'll ever trust a car on auto-pilot no matter how advanced they become unless all manually drive vehicles are prohibited from being used on the same roads.

  13. I don't like the thought of a car on auto-pilot :(

  15. There seem to be a lot of public conversations about driverless cars. I'm nowhere near a comfort level with them; however, considering some of the ways I've seen some dingbats drive there might be some areas where it would be an improvement.

  17. Grace! You made me sit by myself laughing my head off :-)
Wow, that driver really does trust the car´s ability!
Here you can see the car Leonie cruising through Braunschweig (you can see our TU there, too, I walk there every Monday) - and this driver... not so calm! Hands hovering over the wheel, as I would do, too!

There was a leathal accident with such a Tesla here.
At night a woman in dark clothes and no lights suddenly appeared out of nowhere on her push-bike.
    They said the technology failed.
No. Nobody could´ve prevented this, so, yes, I think some day this technology could work.
I´d still be like the Braunschweig-driver, though!

  18. Oh, the Braunschweig-video is from 2010 btw! In live-traffic, too. Guess they made some progress.
