Celebrate the differences..

I'm feeling a little sentimental, it would have been my Dad's birthday today and we miss him! Do we ever stop needing our parents when times are sad. Although they both grew up in the same village in Scotland my parents couldn't have been more different if they tried. Mum had a very strong faith, I don't think Dad did, certainly he didn't when he came back from the horrors of WW11. Dad was over 6ft, Mum a petit 5ft. Dad liked a beer, or two or three :) Mum was teetotal. When they married after the war there was a ten year age difference. They were married for over sixty years and the only consolation when Mum passed was that hopefully they would be reunited again. The point I'm hopefully making is that with so many differences they were very happy, how wonderful it would be if we could all celebrate and enjoy our differences. Happy Friday, take care and stay safe.. p.s. pretty good looking pair right :)

  1. Nice bit of family story here. My parents also came from the same village, and my dad was 10 years older than my mother. Great that they got 60 years together.

  11. My parents have been married 68 years and are still living in the family house and they are totally unlike each other! I'm not surprised your parents are so good looking judging by your wee profile pic and the pics we see of Aimee!

  15. They are a fantastic pair. You are Blessed to have two such loving parents. Lovely post, Grace.

After reading your comment yesterday, you inadvertently made me realize that I put a family birthday on my post yesterday instead of the 14th. My mistake which I have put right. Thank you!

  16. A very powerful example of what we should all do all of the time. Celebrate the differences. Life would be so boring if we all were the same. Wonderful photos of your parents and a truly beautiful post.

  22. A wonderful tribute to your parents. I think people today, don't try to work through their differences and actually try to appreciate them. Your parents are a great example.

  27. They make a gorgeous couple.

My father was Irish Catholic. Mother was Polish Catholic. She was devout. He was a skeptic. He grew up in a large family on a fruit orchard in New Jersey and eventually made a career on Wall Street. She was born in the coal fields of Pennsylvania. Both of her parents died within a few days of her birth in the 1918 flu pandemic. She was raised by a much older brother in the working class side of Southampton, Long Island. They both got jobs in Manhattan and met during World War II (he was terribly nearsighted and relegated to the reserves). And now here I am in the Midwest. It's an American story.

  28. Nope - never stop. Sixty years, how wonderful. And a great example of differences not meaning a hoot. And what a good looking couple!
My in laws are another good example. My husband's mother was an Israeli Jew, and my husband's father was from Iraq. They quarrelled and loved passionately until they both passed away a few years ago.

No, reckon we´ll always miss them, especially on days like these. And as long as we think of them they´re still around, no? And such beautiful pics!
60 years, yay for differences, it seems to work well!
Haha, just look at Ingo and me!

  35. We never stop missing our parents, Grace. My dad's been gone 24 years now, Mom 17 years. I think about both of them every day. Like your parents, mine were also very different. Dad was 16 years older than Mom and came from a deeply troubled childhood. Mom was from a big, happy, blended family. Dad was quiet (except with those he knew well), prone to moodiness. Mom was cheerful, optimistic, very outgoing.
