Mistaken identity.....!!
We went for a walk around the bridges yesterday and I really should show you the bridges....and I will, but this bird which I thought was a Cormorant, but when I researched it a bit more thoroughly at home turned out to be an Australasian Darter (Darter) put on such a show for me, stretching out his wings to dry and turning his head this way and that as if to say 'make sure you get my best side' that I decided to show him off today. Have to admit I was a little disappointed he wasn't a Cormorant, commonly know as a 'Shag' .....hehe! there, I got to say it anyway.....!!

Nice pose anyway. ;-)
ReplyDeleteVery nice bird and shot. Never mind if you have been mistaken.
ReplyDeleteHave a nice week!
"Ciao" from Italy.
Looks good!
ReplyDeleteHe is a magnificent specimen. I think the main difference is that the cormorant beak ends in a bit of a hook and is more solid, whereas the beak of the Darter is slender and sharper.
ReplyDeleteYou have taken a terrific shot of him, Grace.
W O W !
ReplyDeletePreening for YOU. Very Cool

He's a really cocky shag! Nice portrait of the waterside show off!
ReplyDeleteHe was posing for you!
ReplyDeleteWhat a beauty! Great shot.
ReplyDeleteNice close-up of the old show-off. You post a photo of an Australian shag and your comment count will go off the charts!
ReplyDeleteNice and sharp - good camera and lens, obviously. It seems to be a bit of a show-off.
ReplyDeleteVery nice....
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your day !

stunning capture Grace!
ReplyDeletelol at what you got to say!! :)
Peu importe que ce n'était pas un cormoran. Le spectacle devait, tout de même, être magnifique.
ReplyDeleteBon début de semaine, Gracie!
je le trouve majestueux, tres belle photo
ReplyDeleteWow, what a beautiful and elegant bird. Great picture!
ReplyDeleteWow, such an elegant pose! Great shot, Grace!
ReplyDeleteHe's making a great show, you made the right choice to post his picture today, no matter what name he must be called! :o)
ReplyDelete(It seems that comments work again, Yiipeee!)
Isn't it amazing how much we can always learn. I hoverer heard of a darter before. I would have called a cormorant. Will have to have a better look next time I see one. PS.. Never heard of 'shag' either.
ReplyDeleteAn impressive bird, by any name...
ReplyDeleteChrissy
well, you certainly did capture his best side, even if he wasn't the 'shag' you were hoping for.
ReplyDeleteI love these birds, so lovely to watch when they dive for food.
ReplyDelete«Louis» would welcome your bridge photos at his Sunday Bridges meme. It posts at 00:01 hrs, central Europe time each Sunday.
ReplyDeleteOh come on! The 'Snake Bird' imposter looks WAAAAY more exotic than a shag!!!
ReplyDeleteFunny! I've heard of a Darter, but have never seen one. We have cormorants here but also large numbers of anhingas (I can't tell the difference) and the latter also must dry their wings - has something to do with the oil on them.
ReplyDeleteWow - that is an AMAZING shot!
ReplyDeleteYou're so funny! But despite it not being a Shag (I got to say it, too!), this photo is beautiful! Perfect shot of it stretching its wings, literally :D
ReplyDeleteHe is showing off and you captured him at the perfect moment! Lovely guy.

Let me envy you for all the species of birds you can see and photograph. It is hard to see more than pigeons (which are rats not birds) and gulls here. I can spot the rare sparrow or the even rarer cormorant, but it is not easy...
ReplyDeleteWOW! Fantastic capture and gorgeous bird!
ReplyDeleteSuper capture Grace! Nice of him to pose for you.
ReplyDeleteil fait son important pour finir sur internet
ReplyDeleteHi Grace, you have been busy whilst I've been away! This pix I think is my favourite though....!
