Not as bad as it looks.....!

This shot was taken from Henderson Cliffs, which by White Cliffs of Dover standards is a bit of a stretch! Looking down towards Kwinana and the Alcoa Refinery. Despite the clouds of smoke billowing from the many chimneys Alcoa is committed to a high standard of environmental performance and has for the last thirty years been in partnership with Greening Australia (good little video) planting more than 200 million trees over that period. Did I mention Alcoa is an aluminum refinery, interesting fact, apparently 75% of all aluminum ever produced is still in use today, recycling is a marvelous thing!  Have a wonderful Sunday... p.s sorry the photos aren't so sharp, we were quite a distance away and the light was going fast....To see more chimneys from around the world click City Daily Photo Theme Day .....

  2. Very interesting!! I've always been fascinated by Perth. I think it's a lot like my own city of Tucson. I look forward to following your blog and seeing the city through your eyes. Hopefully one day we'll be able to visit:) Chris from Las Aventuras

  5. Glad to know that's a 'green smoke'! As to your version of the White Cliffs of Dover, I love them and they look much like ours in this area too. :-)

  8. P.S.: ummmm, Paris was very nice today. Just a tad too hot for me (28 humid degrees but thankfully with some wind). Went to Montmartre, not for the touristy bit lol, but to buy some fabric (tons of fabric shops!) A friend of mine has started DIY clothes and accessories and she wants me for her guinea pig. Some time soon, I shall proudly sport a handbag and a blouse. At least, I hope I will! Then a nice traditional French dinner in the XVth arrondissement and now I'm almost ready for bed! Have a great dimanche, oui !

  9. The alcoa smelter at henry's point near geelong nearly shut down because of rising costs but was given a life line by the federal government saving about 400 jobs :-).

  15. Just like our local paper mill - what used to be a polluted plume of smoke coming out of the stacks is now almost 100% pure steam. Thankfully!

  16. An apt post as July 1 marks the day when the nation's 500 biggest polluters start paying a $23-a-tonne carbon price under one of the federal government's most contentious polices.
Photos are fine, Gracie!! Have a great day - sunshine all the way.

  19. The contrast between the wild nature and human progress is great here ! But I prefer the natural wildness..

  20. Great theme day shots. And your photos are beautiful (and sharp) so please don't apologize! And it was good to hear that Alcoa is environmentally conscious...I don't think that was always the case.

Love those cliffs! In pictures. I wouldn't want to stand on top of them. :-)

  21. It is good to hear that the plant is environmentally responsible. Aluminum plants are huge consumers of electricity.

  22. Love the cliffs and ALCOA's commitment.

  23. You have to break an egg to make an omelette! Even if Alcoa's effort is 'greenwash' the recycling figures for Aluminium make it a necessary material in today's world. The smelter has to go somewhere.

  24. You got chimneys and scenery at the same time. Very nice indeed. I'm with all the others, glad to hear of Aloca's environmental efforts.
