Valentine shmalentine, let's call the whole thing off :)

Seriously! If you read my blog often you'll know that I am a true 'romantic' at heart.. but like Christmas and Mother/Father's Day, Valentine Day has become in the words of someone famous, I just can't remember who :) 'a hideous example of consumerism at it's worst'. It's all in the simple gesture not how much money is spent n'est pas! My sister-in-law gives her husband of many years a Mars Bar for V Day.. because he loves them but normally resists them, now that's cool! I prefer the heart below, only it was the 60/70's I 'hearted' :) However you celebrate.. or not, the day, have a good one. De Fontijn.. Fountain Bar.....

With just over a week to go Fringe World is still drawing in the big crowds.. long queues at the box office attest to the determination of Perthites and visitors to see as much as they can before.. poof! it all disappears for another year! The Fontres above in The Urban Orchard created by Dutch company De Fontijn looks brilliant in the daylight but if you check out this short video of its construction you will see how fabulous it looks at night.. will be after that shot when I'm in there next week :) I'm a big bit over this hot humid weather, looking forward to wearing scarves, gloves and boots, oh yes! Net-Work, fragile.. and powerful!

I apologize straight up for the overload of images but I defy anyone who finds themselves gazing on this truly amazing installation by Korean artist Do Ho Suh named  Net-Work to take less than the ??? shots that I took.. and then to choose oh la! Part of the Perth Festival 2014 which began on Friday.. yes, even more going on in Perth, it's crazy! Courtesy of the artist and Lehmann Maupin Gallery this brilliant piece sits on the foreshore of the Swan River looking out over to the city, a more perfect spot does not exist!

A 'fishing net' made up of thousands of tiny gold and chrome plated figures.. the gold lying glistening on the pristine white sand..  the shimmering silver draped down to the waters edge, seriously fabulous!

Golden bodies 'sunbathing'.....

In the images below the net was stirring gently in the breeze marrying with the description of this piece.. 'moving in unison with wind and water, conveys the paradox of fragility and strength in numbers' .. brilliant!

The shot below shows the whole shimmering installation with the city skyline behind. I'm not sure if my images do this piece justice, I think you really have to 'experience' it! If any Perthites out there haven't seen it yet, it will be there in all it's splendour until the 1st of March, absolutely worth a visit! I hope I'm forgiven for going overboard once again.. tomorrow hopefully just one shot :) Happy Wednesday, take care and stay safe.....  

The power of RED.....!

 

According to legend a mythical beast named Nian would come on the first day of the Lunar month to eat livestock, crops and also children. One day villagers saw that Nian was scared away by a little child wearing red. They realised that he was afraid of the colour red and would hang red lanterns, scrolls and red paper on their windows and doors when the New Year was about to come. Firecrackers were also used to scare him away and he never came to the village again.....

The Lunar New Year celebrations are winding down now here in Perth.. here are a few shots of the 'red lantern' tree in the foyer of Crown Perth. The first shot is the lantern tree reflected in the entrance to the casino.. above looking up to the glass and sails of  the foyer ceiling .. and below bringing it all into perspective. I see terrible images of flooding and wild storms in the NH on the news, I hope all is well and mean it more than ever when I say take care and stay safe....

Rochester Ginger.. 'bring out your dark side'.....!

A 'non alcoholic drink with the kick of 2 very angry mules'.. oh how I wish I'd seen this on Saturday before I actually had two alcoholic drinks.. seriously I'm such a lightweight, after a glass of champagne to toast Aimee's birthday and two glasses of wine on Saturday, yesterday I was like a very angry mule.. without the ginger :) We went into Northbridge to catch the Chinese New Year  festivities, if you click the link you'll see a short film of everything I missed! Stalls selling food and crafts lined both sides of James Street from the Piazza down to the Perth Cultural Centre.....

You can just see the lights back there for Fringe World at the entrance to the Cultural Centre....

I 'photo-napped', good word oui :) a group having their picture taken with members of the WA Police Pipe Band.....

I missed the actual Lion Dance because it started 10 minutes early and I was running late eh! but later I did catch this 'lion' limbering up and having a bit of fun with a few youngsters that had gathered around. I'm looking forward to catching up with what you've been up to over the weekend today, hope it was.. or is still, a good one! Take care.....

Monkeying around.....!

Built in 1896 in the Federation Filigree style by architect Michael Cavanagh to accommodate prospectors during the WA Gold Rush in the 1890's the Brass Monkey on the corner of James & William St., back then described as 'one of the most lavish' hotels in Perth is these days one of the most photographed hotels in Perth.. it does look pretty  memorable lit up at night don't you think?

... looking good also in reflection.. the Brass Monkey reflected in the New Moon dim sum restaurant! Northbridge is nothing if not diverse! Dim sum is not my favourite but judging from the queues at lunch and dinner it is for many.. are you a 'dim sum'er'?  I haven't been around much this week, Aimee's 30th seems to have stretched from a birthday to a birthweek :) big barbeque today and then it's overs and back to normal (?)!
