The sweet smell of times past..

I can't even remember the name of the small country town, I'm not sure if there was an actual town anymore.. but there was a sign at the side of the road, 'Cemetery'.. and a gate! The smell of wild freesias growing en-mass around the perimeter of the graveyard and the one sad looking tree was overpoweringly beautiful and yet overwhelmingly melancholy at the same time.

Many of the graves were well tended.. many more were simply stones laid around the burial spot.. to me it seemed a little forlorn and I was pleased to note that mother nature was doing her bit re the flowers to make it a more cheerful place.. it also re-enforced my wish to be cremated and scattered when I pass, the idea of being forgotten somewhere in the ground is not for me.. and on that happy note :) have a good Wednesday, take care and stay safe...

  1. There's a cemetery similar to this on Cedar Key...lots of graves marked by stones...very forlorn. I'll meet you on the breeze!

  2. The freesias looks beautiful. Some cemeteries do look very sad and uncared for.

  4. I had not yet an opinion about a grave or cremation, until a close family member had been burried at a graveyard. It was a terrible rainy day and to see that coffin going down in that wet ground broke my heart. At that moment I decided for cremation.

  6. I adore the smell of freesias, although we don't find them wild here, I don't think. When I was a small child I was my aunt's bridesmaid and had a circlet of fresh freesias in my hair.

  7. The spring flowers look terrific. The dead tree in a cemetery underscored to departed.
Thank you for your comments on my mountain pass photos.

  13. Odd to see more of an emphasis on horizontal grave stones like that. Terrific captures!

  14. The graveyard looks very bleak, I never seen one like that. The flowers add a touch of colour that I like. Cremation for me and a drop in the ocean so I can float around.

  16. I think you are going to burn anyway, when the time comes :-P The scent of old freesias is wonderful. What a pity new varieties barely smell.

  19. The tree looks like it should be buried, too.

I bought burial plots for my parents and for Collin and myself when my dad died, but Collin and I have since decided on cremation.

  20. Beautiful flowers, Grace and yes, that tree looks sad in there.
Same here, in our last wills we say burn and scatter someplace.
Poor Bro has to take care of our parent´s graves, it´s a lot of time-consuming work for a young family and expensive, too.

  23. I haven't seen stones marking the grave shape before. Yes. There is a sadness here, but the flowers are a welcome splash of colour.

  24. Great photos! I like exploring old cemeteries, but it is kind of sad when they are forgotten and overgrown.
