The Splendid Promenade Jetty..

Extending out more than 200mt the Como jetty, built in 1907 is the longest jetty on the Swan River. A timber structure built in 1907, rebuilt in 1982. Picture this.. in 1929 a swimming enclosure was constructed at the end of the jetty, during the long hot summers the trams arriving in Como would have been filled with bathers eager to cool off on Como beach.. I found a wonderful old b & w photo c1929, the jetty lined with swimmers in their modest bathing suits and swimming caps jumping off the jetty into the Swan River, unfortunately I don't seem to be able to share it with you. Deemed unsafe in 1994 the enclosure was removed.

So P climbed down onto the landing slip/fishing spot below and shouted up, 'it's a bit slippy but you can get some good shots under the bridge from here'.. yeh, like that was going to happen :) Have a good Thursday, take care and stay safe...

  1. That's quite a walk out on that. I can see it giving problems to someone who's not crazy about the water.

  3. Old photos like the one you describe are wonderful, PDP. The area is lovely today. It looks like one would be in the middle of that channel at the end of the jetty.

Great photos Grace! I can picture the people crowded onto the jetty.

  6. I'm surprised that you wouldn't go onto the sloppy wood beside the deep water, Grace! ;-))

  7. Its a fine jetty and I note, you have to be careful and look after your children as there aren't handrails. What an onerous responsibility.

  8. I think if you intend to walk all the way to the end of the jetty you should take some provisions - food and water as you might not get back before dark and the stores close. Pretty pics and love those swans. I guess that's why they call this the Swan River?

  9. Love the black swans something we do not see very often. Pity that you could not have used the b and W photo it would have been interesting. Love the photos though. Take care Diane

  10. That is an old Jetty, even if it has had rebuilding. There really are swans not the Swan River. Might have thought they would be long gone by now.

  13. The jetty seems to go on and on. Quite impressive, I would be glad to walk to the end. It must have been nice seeing photos of people enjoying themselves back in the days.

  18. That made me laugh, I wouldn't have gone down there either! I love the detail on that gate in the first photo but, best of all I love those swans enjoying "their" river.

  19. It seems a bit scary indeed, Grace!
I think (!) if you take a picture of the pic alongside with something personal you are allowed to post it. Or maybe you just show me next time we visit! :-)
