The birder...

While in Joondalup yesterday we popped over to check out the bird action on the lake. We chatted for a while with the gentleman above who informed us that he walks around the lake twice a day and knew exactly where to find all of the many bird species nesting or feeding on the lake.. someone this serious, look at the equipment, is known as a 'birder'. I'd say that what P enjoys is 'birding', not quite so serious.. and moi, well if there's a bird around that will stay still long enough for me to get a good shot I'm a happy chappy :)

It's the first time in a while that I've been to the lake and I was quite shocked to see how low the water level was but apparently it's quite normal for this time of year after a hot summer. You can see by the marker below how deep it can get after a decent rainy period. Will come back and check it out in a few months, or maybe after the weekend :) lots of rain coming this weekend! Happy Friday, take care and stay safe... p.s. check out those grey skies, no blue skies here until Monday!

  1. Quite a good perch for observing them. The skies do have a bleak feel to them.

  2. These wetlands are perfect for watching birds. Better light would have made better photos, but I like your ideas here.

  4. I enjoyed these photos very much but I don't understand birders. I've run into groups of them in Cedar Key, Florida, who look out over the marshes with binoculars. And then they go home. Why in heaven's name don't they take photographs to document their sightings? Birding seems to be photography without a camera. I don't get it! :))

  5. I agree with Jacob, never understood why birders never have a camera with them. Strange group I must say :)

  6. I just had lunch outside in a park - sunny and +18˚C - perfect! And watched some ducks but took no pics!

  7. I "get" birders and totally appreciate their knowledge. Many of them do take photos, and are brilliant photographers. It's not for me though, I don't have the patience.

  8. I know a few people like him. They are dead serious about the birds.

  10. Oh my, that lake really does look low. It looks a lot like some of the lakes in California right now.

  11. No blue skies? What has happened in Perth? People aren't quite as disparaging about bird watchers as they are about train spotters.

  12. He does look very serious about his birding. I love birds too, but I'm more like you!

  14. You can need some rain I see. I am not a birder either but looking with a binocular gives you sometimes a very different look!

  21. I see birders all the time. Some of us like to photograph birds, some like to observe them through binoculars, some of us do both. Different strokes for different folks.

  24. He obviously lives is Birder Heaven. Two walks around the lake/pond a day. He has it made. I still do not know one bird from another, but I keep my feeders full and love to sit and watch them. My hummers are going crazy and this summer we are inundated with the traditional yellow butterflies doing fancy air dances for me to see.
