The Art Gallery of WA.. things to do in the city when it's hot, hot, hot!

If you find yourself in the city on a 43C day what better way to cool off and while away an hour or so than a wander around the Art Gallery of WA where there is always something to interest every taste. The voluptuous 'Black Beauty' below by French sculptor/painter/filmmaker Niki de Saint Phalle appealed to me 'enormously' :)

As did, along with a guided tour group, the abstract curves of the massive bronze reclining figure by English sculptor and artist Henry Moore.

The 'red and blue chair' below by Dutch furniture designer and architect Gerrit Rietveld..created in the 1970s by Italian manufacturing company Cassina and the 'drop stone bench' by American born Peter Adams is confirmation that art comes in many forms...

It also comes in forms that I just don't 'get'! Am I the only one who looks below and sees a black painted square and ... that's it! I know I know, I'm an art pleb :) The exhibition I specifically went to see was 'The American Dream The American Nightmare', show you tomorrow. Happy Wednesday, take care and stay safe...

  1. I like the architecture. No, you're not the only one... I just see a black painted square too. Reminds me of something similar in our gallery.

  5. I'm sure a guide would explain the nuances of the brush strokes in that painting but between you and me, I agree. It's just a black canvas. We have one in white at our museum. ;-)

  9. Looks very interesting and cool :) I've seen art like that black square and don't understand it either. Maybe that's the point :)

  10. There are many things about modern "art" that I do not understand and that black square is one of them, as well as that reclining whatchamacallit. ;) Looks like a fun place to spend some time out of the heat, though!

  13. Beautiful art gallery. I'll trade your temperatures for now. Someone turned of the heat here. We've been hovering in the 3C and 4C range with high winds the past few days. 0C tonight. Extremely unusual for here where we should be in the 15C tp 21C range for this time of year.

  15. Such designer chairs amuse me. They look stylish, quite beautiful at times, but never comfortable and nor are they.

  19. Art galleries are great places to spend some time as your excellent pictures show. Had not thought of them as places to cool off on a hot day, but what ever works.

  20. I haven't been to the gallery for a while, must go again soon but think I'll wait 'till the weather cool down a bit.

  21. This is a good looking museum. I'm with you about the Niki de St. Phalle; always love her work.

  22. It looks like a good place to visit, no matter the weather.
It's hot here right now also. Aren't we supposed to have opposing seasons?

  23. An interesting refuge on both hot and rainy days Grace. PS I am with you ... I just don't get the black painted square.

  24. I can imagine this is a popular place on a hot, summer day! Love the art you've highlighted and the space is fab too!

  25. I like the items you showed, Niki de Saint Phalle I remember very well from a sculpture close to my house in Amsterdam in the seventies. And Henry Moore I have always liked very much. So nice you have seen a real Rietveld chair, it is our national pride! That heatwave in your place must be terrible, can't even imagine the temperature, only once from a Death Valley visit in the US long ago.

  27. Nice way to keep cool Grace.
I've also seen that black "painting", can't understand that type of art either...

  28. Really, Grace, a black "painting"???
I know nothing about art then! Well, nice to look at the Black Beauty, but I wouldn´t want her in my living room ;-)

  31. Your art museum looks like a good one. When in Hartford, I usually go to either the Wadsworth Atheneum or the New Britain Museum of American Art (with my camera, of course) when it is rainy and I can't be outside.

  32. So interesting, and thank you for sharing photos of the crowd, that's one of my favorite things to watch in art galleries too see other people's reaction to the art pieces!
