In the eye of the beholder!

When this piece went up on the wall of the Corner Gallery in Subiaco it was deemed 'inappropriate and offensive' by some of the female shopkeepers in the area stating 'how does this help the self-esteem of women who might be viewing this image' demanding that it be taken down and someone made accountable! Read on.. the artist Fieldey (remember this) replied 'as a woman and a feminist I painted this piece to satirise objectification of woman'! Quoting Stephen Bevis, Arts Editor, The West Australian newspaper 'art that just makes people feel comfortable is likely to be craft, not art. Good public art should engage us in a kind of debate, interrupting the mundane and stimulating a fresh appreciation of our surroundings. Hopefully, bravery will prevail so that artists' vision will not be hammered out of shape by a selection committee'.. succinctly put Mr. Bevis! Personally this image did not dent my self -esteem in the slightest :) Happy Monday, take care..

  5. Well, I'm glad he said "likely to be craft" because I still think there is an art to making people feel comfortable. It doesn't always have to be a "statement".

  6. You can't be too careful around the politically correct. Particularly those with no sense of humour.

  8. Love street art and it sounds like it achieved the purpose of the artist.

  9. It certainly works with me, and I like both Fieldey's and Bevis's remarks.

  13. The real question is why one dog is black and the other has a white streak and pink ears.

  16. I am amused, not offended. Sometimes we take ourselves too seriously. S. Bevis is an intelligent man!

  17. I find it funny not offensive. I would have thought the artist to be a man though and not a woman...

  18. You know, I would call myself a feminist and don't find anything offensive about this. In fact, it made me laugh when I saw it. I think this is great!

  19. Provocative in the sense that it provokes thinking.

  20. I like the mural Grace. I don't find it offensive. I do disagree however with the Western Australian Newspaper that good art should engage us in some kind of debate. Good art can also be something that you just look at and say "Gosh that's beautiful". No debate necessary.

  23. It doesn't do anything for me. Some artists live in a world of fantasy and weird ideas.

  28. I wonder what those women´d argue if they found a similar mural of a man there?
