I won't be there.....!

Well it's official, I won't be one of the expected 42,000 walker/runners in the annual City to Surf today and just so you know, I'm really fed up about it! I've participated in this event for many years and really enjoyed the challenge, usually tearing along at break neck speed trying to keep up with my 6ft walking buddy and last year with Aimee at a more civilized speed taking in the sights. After injuring my knee about six months ago, my physio has 'strongly' advised against it, it's the hills that are the killer, along the flat..no problem. So P will take my place and walk with Aimee while I watch from the sidelines..next year, I'll be back! The City to Surf attracts top runners from all over the world, I didn't realize that the prize money was quite so substantial or I would have moved along a lot faster haha! After gathering on Langley Park, the walkers/runners head up through the skyscrapers to the start line on St. George's Terrace.....
Once the starters orders are called it's all on! You'll see one of the hills I'm talking about here, there are a few along the way, but the last one coming up to the finish line is the killer! Hmmm maybe it won't be too bad watching for a change. Have a wonderful Sunday, take care.....

  2. It looks like a terrific event. I used to participate in the local run/walks, but bad knees put a stop to that years ago. So look forward to next year, and enjoy being a spectator!

    1. So much for "the loneliness of the long distance runner"! Personally I believe the expression "fun run" is an oxymoron, and that exercise is a spectator sport... so these photos are great value :)

  5. What huge, great event!! But you're wise not to push your knees!! I can speak from experience, I have crappy knees and they might not be as bad if I'd listened to my doctors advice all those years ago! Terrific captures for the day though and you can enjoy from a distance! Hope you have a great weekend anyway!!

  9. I won't be there either!
By the way, you are right about cats, they choose their people, if I were you, I would keep your little feline friend in at night....

  10. Walks/runs like this seems to attract more and more participants each year! The ones organised on my peninsula are increasing so much! Even on Australia Day, so many are up early to participate in one from Safety Beach to Rosebud - round the coastline of Port Phillip Bay. Love all the costumes in your photos! So bright and crazy!

  11. Terrific photos Grace! Just enjoy the sidelines this year and I sure hope the weather is nice!
PS: aren't knee injuries just so incapacitating!? So just look after this year and net year you can claim the prize money ;)

  12. The numbers are amazing. Is this a Marathon? You'll be back, not to worry.

A few years ago, Lois ran the New York City Marathon with 35,000 other runners. That was quite spectacular also.

    Love that last shot!

  19. Shame about your knee. Here in Bcn, the re are so many marathons or other races all year long, there is barely a Sunday from March to November when they don't block parts of town for firemen races, waiter races, nurse races, and so on. 42 last year, I believe. We're a sporty city.

  20. That must be a disappointment for you. The older the body is, the more it goes in decline....

  25. This looks like a really fun event:) But it's good you're not walking for the event with the knee. About 10 years ago, I suffered from a bad injury and had to stay off of it and glad did. There's next year....and you'll still be able to watch:)

  26. What a wonderful event and photo series - glad you still got to 'join' the festivities in some way, even if it wasn't in your usual manner. I also face knee injuries from heavy running in my teens-20s...you are truly wise to take it easy until it's 100% better! :)
