Reflections on Wellington.....

Looking up Wellington Street from the bridge crossing over to the city centre from the train station and Northbridge soon to be joined by the Perth City Link which is well underway on the right of Wellington St. with the sinking of the railway lines.  To the left you can see the entrance to Forrest Place marked by the controversial sculpture affectionately (?) known as The Cactus, check out the video to see the reaction from the public when it was going up, it really is amazing how quickly you get used to something, I hardly even notice it now! I hope your skies are blue over the weekend (don't torment yourselves by looking at my weather gadget haha!), take care and stay safe.....

  1. Loved the video! I'm sure that people will grow to accept it just as Parisians eventually embraced the Eiffel Tower!

  4. With a backdrop that gorgeous you could put up a giant potato sack and it would still look good, haha! Love this and the sculpture is pretty neat actually, kind of like a giant fun playground set :) Hope it stays gorgeous for your weekend!!

  14. This is a very lovely urban scene. Perth is such a beautiful city and seems to be forward-looking also. Re the Cactus: I don't know what to say. $1 million is a lot of money. Does it have a purpose other than to point some green arms up in the sky?

I know what you mean about getting so used to things you don't even see them. People I've know for a long time walk right by me. I say, "Hey!" and then they say, "Oh, I didn't see you laying across the sidewalk when I stepped over you!"

Do you believe such a thing?

  15. Very interesting looking - you do have to wonder about the use of the money though...in this economy, couldn't they have found a better use for the money?

  16. Perth has a beautiful downtown area. My attitude about the Cactus is . . . hurray! You can never justify art if you try to approach it as dollars and cents. But without art to stimulate and excite and inspire people, a city would be very bland.

  17. I find the sculpture interesting although a bit pricey, I think someone could have built that with some recycled plastic and it would have cost a whole lot less!

  18. That's a beautiful space. Renovation always causes a little controversy...and sometimes backfires:) Tucson is going through something similiar and it's quite...um....quite....the project:) It began 10 years ago....and doesn't appear like anything has changed:) Have a fun weekend:)

  19. I saw that when I was over there and even got a good pic of it, but didn't know any of the background - thanks Grace!

  20. I walked to the forest street for some souvenirs in my last trip. Seems a lot of positive infrastructure change in Perth

  21. The city looks spectacular, calm and noiseless, no traffic. I guess The Cactus add a little spicy to that space! Besides, street art is harmless.
