It really pays to take a diversion from one's usual route now and then. Walking through a new arcade from Hay to Murray St my heart skipped a beat.. was this an Art Deco building that had slipped through my net :) The original building on this spot, Retort House, was built in 1886 but the above built in 1927, right time frame, it has 'the look'. What do you think? The original Retort House had many diverse uses and even after the Electricity & Gas Dept. took over in 1920, a colourful history (scroll down). It looks a little deserted right now, will be keeping my eye on it. Happy Tuesday, take care and stay safe..
I think it is. It has quite a distinctive look.
ReplyDeleteIt’s a beauty!
ReplyDeleteYes, this 91 year old building does have Art Deco traits. It looks great, and has more character than more modern boxes. Good to know where the utility offices are located.
ReplyDeleteDear little place. Deco? Hmmmm?
ReplyDeleteYes, I agree, Deco-ish. Whatever, it is a good building.
ReplyDeleteIt is beautiful, it could be deco-ish as Andrew says.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely Art Deco, though the term covers quite a variation of style. Although the name derives from "decoratif" many of the later buildings were quite plain.
ReplyDelete...pretty classy!
ReplyDeleteYes, I like it, and I agree with the Art Deco denomination. I like those semicircular "balconies?" above the doors.
ReplyDeleteI would go with Art Deco for this one, Grace. I like it a lot!
ReplyDeleteIt's wonderful Grace. So glad you found it!
ReplyDeleteIt looks like 'le musée de la mer" in Biarritz. Yes it seems clearly art déco architecture. Nice picture Grace, Have a nice tuesday
ReplyDeleteI often wonder or compare art deco and Art Nouveau....both sort of from the same time peroid.
ReplyDeleteCoffee is on
It looks quite regal.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great discovery! It's a real beauty. I hope it finds a good new life. (You're right that I don't want the forest destroyed for more camping. The parks people want the revenue. I think they're trying to make an end run around locals.)
ReplyDeleteA new arcade from Hay to Murray St? Oh, my, Grace. I´ll come to a whole new place, I guess! Beautiful building, never jumped in my eyes, either, though.
ReplyDeleteNice building Grace, not sure about Art Deco or not, but certainly nice.
ReplyDeleteIt's a wonderful building whatever you call it, and it seems to me that "art deco" means different things to different people, so call it Art Deco and celebrate its beauty! :)
ReplyDeleteLooks like Art Deco to me.
ReplyDeleteNão faz muito o meu estilo.
ReplyDeleteUm abraço e boa semana.

Could be, I am not sure.
ReplyDeleteIt looks like it to me, but in any case it's a very lovely building.
ReplyDeleteThat really is a beauty! I love that sort of fence like structure along the upper floor. That building is very well put together.
ReplyDeleteLooks a great building ...
ReplyDeleteAll the best Jan
