Not a Bansky, a ROA.....!
Spotted on the wall of a furniture store as we were leaving Fremantle on Thursday, an extremely large very cool mural of a Numbat, a Western Australian marsupial that exists mainly on a diet of termites. This 25m mural read the story, it's amazing, was commissioned by the City of Fremantle who paid $15,000 to a Belgian born graffiti artist known only as ROA who, although not as well known as British street artist Bansky, has murals in cities like New York and Berlin. He painted the mural almost overnight and picked the Numbat as it's an endangered species, his point being that people who live in cities tend to forget about their environment! The technique that he uses for these massive murals is described in the above link, fascinating! Has anyone spotted a ROA in their city? I'm really missing the CDP forum, feel a little out of touch, am I the only one? Hope you have a fab weekend.....!

It is fabulous Grace! A wonderful subject too.
ReplyDeleteI really miss the CDP too but have no idea what has happened to it - have you heard anything at all?
This is very cool - though not such an attractive marsupial!
ReplyDeleteI read that CDP was hacked - not sure what happens next to get it back up and running.
At first I thought he was a bit unattractive, but the more I looked at him the cuter he got...similar to the too many beers syndrome of days gone by...Have a nice weekend, Grace.
ReplyDeleteIt is AWESOME!
ReplyDeleteexcellent!
ReplyDeleteI love it! I don't like unauthorized graffiti by egotistic amateurs, but this is quality art authorized by the city. Bravo!
ReplyDeleteThis is great! A fantastic mural. Yes, I'm missing CDP too! Hopefully they will get it running again soon.
ReplyDeleteThat's an impressive design. Bravo for the endangered species project!
ReplyDeleteAmazing mural. I love that second shot.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great post - full of interesting information, both about the animal and the artist. Amazing that so much painting can be done so quickly.
ReplyDeleteBonza mural and such attention to detail right down to the hair sticking up :-).
ReplyDeleteThat's brilliant, and no tagging over the top. Because I've been away I only tried to visit CDP today to see what the monthly theme was and found it wasn't there. What happened?
ReplyDeleteLOVE this gotta "pin" it!

It's a pity that every clown with a spraycan is not so artistic. Great piece of work, love your second shot especially.
ReplyDeleteBellissimo questo murale, è grandissimo!!buon week end...ciao
ReplyDeleteGosh, that's the biggest numbat I've ever seen!!! Never heard about ROA though.
ReplyDeleteYep, the CDP portal is down, and that's quite terrible!
Wow, not bad pay for a few hours work!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fabulous shot of an amazing mural! The detail is striking...hard to get that kind of detail on such a large scale! I have to admit, it would take me aback a little to see that, rounding the corner!
ReplyDeleteWOW That's fantastic!! I'll keep my eyes open - surely it can't be the only ROA in OZ??!!
ReplyDeleteI dunno, looks like a big ol' scraggly rat! :-)
ReplyDeleteNah, the mural is just excellent and I'm glad you put the man in the 2nd photo 'cause it gives us a sense of scale.
It's really quite amazing how these artists can do such huge murals and still maintain proper sizing and perspective.
Re your comment about the portal: Does anyone know what's going on? Is CDP crashing? Very strange. I don't think it's ever been out this long. Very frustrating, too.
Ya, looks like a rat to me. Diet of termites? No wonder so thin.... hahahaha
ReplyDeleteA very good use of 'art.'
ReplyDeletelove the shot of the walker beneath the numbat's chin.
ReplyDeleteFinally, some free time.
ReplyDeleteNever heard of the numbat, let alone ROA. He's probably never come to the American Midwest. If I rounded a corner and confronted this mural I might be a bit scared. I wonder if the man in the bottom picture smells anything like a termite.
That's rather incredible! Anything like this in Versailles? You've got to be joking!!!!
ReplyDeleteI miss the portal too, I wonder what's up, it's been a week hasn't it?
Fabulous artwork Grace. Looks like the ones in West Perth.
ReplyDeletewow Amazing, thank you so much for sharing this phot with us, lovely! i am impress, really
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you put in the shot with the man for scale reference. That is a HUGE mural! I don't know why, but I sort of like the looks of this dude. :)
ReplyDeleteI love both Banksy and ROA! This is so cool.
ReplyDeleteplutôt impressionnant
ReplyDeleteil est énorme sur le mur, mais pourtant, il a une bonne tête.
ReplyDeleteBon week-end, Gracie!
brilliant work and captured beautifully Grace!
ReplyDeleteIt is good to see that there is still some good artist in a world of scribblers and charlatans...
ReplyDeleteBy the way, I love the idea that you do not have daylight saving time in Perth!
is awesome!!
ReplyDeleteIt scared me! I've not heard of ROA. Better have a look.
ReplyDeleteHuge indeed. Great work. I shall have me eyes open to find something alike. Please have a good Sunday.
ReplyDeleteThe server which hosted the portal was hacked, and the boys have been doing a rebuild from scratch. They are hoping to have it up again by the end of this weekend (in the northern hemisphere). Expect it to be a bit different, and perhaps a bit shakey for the first little while.
ReplyDeleteThat is a very good use of a wall!
ReplyDeleteI would love to see the animal in the wild.
Cheers - Stewart M - Melbourne
