Then and Now..St. Georges Terrace.....

Yesterday I had an appointment in the city and while walking through one of the arcades afterwards I spied a group of very old photo's of Perth circa 1900, fascinating stuff! So amazing to see dirt roads and horse and carriages where there are now wide avenues and queues of traffic. I think I've mentioned before that my favorite street in the city is St. Georges Terrace, the heritage buildings nestled amongst the skyscrapers make a great contrast, so I chose this old photo of St. Georges Terrace to do my 'then and now' comparison, there were two pictures of the Terrace, unfortunately the one with all the horse and carriage action going on was directly under a light and impossible to get a shot without a flare, this one is pretty quiet, maybe a weekend, I wish it was a little clearer and minus the dribbles of goodness knows what, but we are talking one hundred and twelve years ago, you can see that even way back then this wide road was destined for great things! I like the sky, makes me wonder if whoever took this shot all those many years ago, didn't do a little bit of tweaking haha!
Oh and btw...Happy Valentine's Day.....!

  8. I can see the dip in the road in both photos, and there the similarities end.

  16. I think that because our history is relatively 'young', we are constantly amazed at the transformations in the cities. Lovely to see the two shots of the same place.

  18. I love the then and now posts, this one is incredible. I was leafing through a book of old postcards of Versailles, it hasn't changed in the last 100 years. The only differences I could spot were clothing and cars! :-)

    Happy Valentine's Day!

  24. I like then-and-now photos. I have a collection of old, 19th and early 20th century travel books so I can compare the old engravings and early photos with the same scenes today.

  30. What an amazing contrast. I often wonder what my grandparents would think of our world now... They saw incredible changes during their lifetimes. My parents, now in their 80s, are electronically connected with cell phones, downloading photos, and programming their TIVO. (My mom does NOT text or tweet, however!)

Wishing you a wonderful Valentine's Day, dear friend.

  32. It is an amazing transformation, Grace. We have similar photos up on display boards in strategic parts of the city and it's quite interesting to contemplate past and present superposed.

  33. And a happy Valentine's Day to you, Grace. Love that early photo, but like yours much better...yours reminds me of a canyon in the middle of the mountains - it's a great urban landscape!
