City Beach Surf Life Saving Club..

Modern architecture can sometimes be less than aesthetically pleasing to the eye, especially if out of character for its situation. The new state of the art City Beach Surf Life Saving Club (click to see the whole building) definitely does not fall into this category.  It is long, low and sleek and looks very much at home on the edge of the wide expanse of white sandy beach. Surf life saving is vital along Australian beaches and the new surf club here provides space for Surf Club operations, functions and training..

Not sure if it was part of the architect's plan or nature doing it's thing but as we walked here alongside the building it seemed as if the sound of the waves crashing on the beach was blowning up and bouncing off the curve of the wall.. très agréable.

If you look to the centre of the shot above you'll see the lookout point and picnic area atop the surf club and below the view along the beach from there. Just for interest if you have a look here you will see the 1920's version of the surf club, couldn't possibly be more different if it tried! Happy Friday, take care and stay safe..

  1. It seems to suit its location well. The angle reminds me of our war museum.

  2. I like the look of this building very much and it's so cool that it has that look out and picnic area. Speaking of Australian beaches, I saw a fantastic photo on Flickr today of Reef Beach sand dunes at Bremer Bay. 4. That's a fine-looking building but I always worry what it'll look like on a wet day in twenty years time; some modern architecture doesn't fare very well.

  5. You are right. The building style could represent arcing white frothy waves or even sails. The whole design blends beautifully into the setting. Love the idea of a natural amphitheatre effect enhancing the sound of the waves.

  6. Very attractive building. It blows away the older version rather easily. Enjoy your weather Grace.

  7. The 1935 club house didn't look too bad but I really like the new one.
