Umbrellas in the garden.....?

You'll probably guess after reading this post that it was way too hot to get out and about much today, so a post closer to home was called for. Thinking of the wonderful perfume, I planted four gardenias back in spring when the weather was much cooler.. the 'Augusta Magnifica' is one of the hardier gardenias but even so the full sun on a 44C day could easily have been their demise! Out came the brollies to provide much needed protection, brilliant idea n'est pas! I'm happy to say all survived and a cooler week ahead is forecast, phew! Meanwhile the brazen hussy below turned her face to the sun and begged for more :) Hope you've had a wonderful weekend, take care.....

  2. Fabulous idea Grace, glad it'll cool down a bit for you! The holly definitely doesn't need a brolly!

  4. I saw several reports about the temperatures in Australia yesterday. CNN talked about it and mentioned Perth as well as Melbourne where the tennis players ca expect a fed hot days on the tennis courts.

  6. How about that, I never thought of using one in the garden. Stay out of the sun!

  7. Brazen or not...she's lovely!!! I love the term "brollies"!!! I'm going to have to remember that one!!!
Is this a case of "hands across the border"???

  8. I just found your blog through your comments on TFG. Love the pictures. I live in Northern Florida and have numerous gardenias, from dwarf through some six-footers. They all thrive in shade. They laugh at the heat but not at direct sun. The flowers are more than worth the wait!

Nice saucy hibiscus. We just had a hard frost so all of mine are a bit limp. They'll be back in June.

  9. You're a clever girl, Grace. I see the temps are reaching above 120 in some parts of Australia. Ouch.

  14. We had mild temperatures today! All in all, I'd prefer not to have to deal with your heat.

  15. An umbrella to cover a tender plant? That would never occur to me. I like that red hussy, but then again, I like all red hussies!

  16. Worth protecting in your howling desert. Nice that a break is coming. We get tropical flowers next week. Details to follow.

  17. Gardeniers are wonderful plants and quite hardy. With the bit of shade, I am sure they will be fine.

  18. Brollies may be needed for RAIN mid week? Fat chance I'd say!! Tully has a 'stay-at-home' mum.

  19. The plants must not like direct sunlight.

  20. Gardenias smell so heavenly, how amazing your blooms must be and how sweet they're well-sheltered under your brolly! I've always been a sucker for a red, red hibiscus:) PS Send heat, we've had deep freeze!

  25. It is good to catch up with your blog after being away for several weeks (in the Galapagos and Peru).

The heat wave in Australia even made the Phoenix newspaper yesterday. The are also talking about the heat at the Australian Open tennis tournament, but that is a continent away from you.

  30. Brollies certainly are multi functional Grace. I have a couple out too as well as an old table over my strawberries. I love gardenias but there is no way I could grow them up here. I now have to resort to succulents and geraniums. Thankfully it has been much cooler today.

  32. That's a very classy plant that has its own umbrella, but it lacks opposable thumbs to open it. Neat idea.

  33. Aww, beautiful flower, Grace! On the bridge the road was icy this morning, gah, no brolly needed over here...

  38. I once used my beach umbrella for several months to keep the sun out during renovation work on my Paris balcony. I love the hibiscus. I miss them in France, although we have a plant called althea with the same flowers but they are only lavendar, pink and white. None of those beautiful reds!
