Hawk eyes....

Before we went down onto the beach on Sunday to take photos of the Telstra Triathlon Series we climbed one of the lookout points to get a bit of an overall view..we weren't the only ones surveying the scene. From high up (25/30mtrs) on a communications pole this  pair of adult Osprey were watching also. Sorry about the quality of the pictures, I hadn't expected to see them and was quite unprepared lens wise. I did go back yesterday, tripod and long lens to the ready, but just to be awkward, the hawks were a no show! I have decided though that this is definitely a project in progress, I will get a clear, close up of them no matter how long it takes, watch this space.....!
It fascinates me that they build their huge nests quite often out in the open atop communication and electricity poles, where as well as the threat of airborne predators there's also the risk of electrocution from shorting circuits in stormy weather, talk about living life on the edge!! This is the outlook that we had from our not quite so high, but high enough viewpoint, so many bikes, so much enthusiastic energy, so many photos to be taken. Is anyone else having probs with blogger, I seem to have had a couple of hiccups with thumbnail images not updating etc. and had my first spam intrusions, how weird is that! C'est la vie, not serious, just annoying oui! Happy mid-week, take care.....

  2. "Conference call"! You're so funny! Those luck Osprey to live up so high in constant danger. Not! I get high just looking at a ladder. I want to be ON THE GROUND!

But I must admit that you got quite a vista way up there!

Something is screwed with CDP! And other things are screwed with Blogger. I had 70 spam on Ocala DP in one day! So I put on word verification but that is such a pain I took it off. Now I'm only getting 10-15 spam per day.

  4. Looking forward to the close-ups, Grace.
I haven't been having blogger problems but I usually can't get the CDP update portal to open. And I have found that some people are stealing my pics so I guess I have to make the files a lot smaller. Always something to figure out!

  5. The osprey perhaps like to be unique nest builders swapping one threat - the tree climbers - for another - being zapped! I have not seen osprey in my world! The nest seems so large!

And Blogger is being a pain for me! Creating posts is a challenge with words appearing after a pause between typing + blog itself seems to load awkwardly!

  6. Do you know that there are some falcons living in Notre Dame, Paris? Protected, of course. Amazing thing, the wildlife in big cities. We have wild hogs roaming the north part of Barcelona, and I remember some foxes in Westminster...

  9. Its definitely a family sized nest. Had a bit of trouble with anonymous comments early on in the year trying sell me everything from feminine hygiene products?? (Last time i looked i was still a bloke) to video games so i removed the anonymous comments option and that fixed it.

  10. Ospreys? You would not be allowed near them in UK, protected species!
Anon is spamming madly for Xmas. Hopefully a large meteorite falls on him (them) the day after.

  11. WOW!!! it looks as though they are there for the long haul, given the amount of twigs and things to build a nest!!

  12. Very rude of the birds not to show up on your return visit!

  14. Back home I lived next to a large forest, where often one could hear and see hawks. Thank you for the memories. Please have a good Wednesday.

    Lovely shots!

  16. I guess the authorities don't like the nesting on what probably looks to them, an absolutely perfect purpose built nesting site.

  17. They must be camera shy!

    Merry Christmas, Grace!

  20. That is a quite a big nest they've created. I think you got a good photo in that top one. I can see why you went to the top for the view. Very nice!

  21. Those Osprey certainly had a good vantage point way up there. Isn't always the way. When you want your subject to appear it often doesn't. Looking forward to your close up Mr De Milne.

  22. Obviously they want a "room with a view" ....I'm sure you'll get your shot Grace even if it means camping out on the Look-out!

  23. I think you captured them rather well. They choose indeed some impossible places to nestle down. But I wait for your tripod pictures.

  24. Ah..I love the ospreys! I'm looking forward to seeing that you've captured an osprey in-flight with a fish dinner. (No pressure at all, Grace.) Love that wide shot of the beach -- gorgeous.

  25. Btw, I haven't been back to check on Henry & Henrietta. (Where does the time go???) But, the eagles are back!

  26. These are the coolest birds ever!! I had no idea they lived over in your woods. I just filmed one yesterday hunting for food. It was a total accident and truly exciting. They are a very unpredictable bird. But when you see them, they cannot be mistaken for any other bird. Such exciting finds you had. Congrats:)

  27. They really are amazing birds - I think they must have the best view, despite the risky lifestyle:) It's too bad they didn't oblige your return visit, but these shots are wonderful!

  28. Great spotting! Here we have hundred of stork nests on electricity poles on the south bank of the Tagus River.
