Let sleeping birds lie..

Yesterday morning we were up and out by 5.30am taking bird pics at Lake Joondalup. Whenever I make the effort to get out and about early I enjoy it so much.. it's the coolest it's going to be all day and the light is tres jolie. The birds were in various stages of awake.. it was full house in the tree below, cormorants with their heads tucked under their wings while pelicans nearby were duck diving for breakfast..

The peculiar looking male musk duck below was halfheartedly calling out in the hope of attracting a female, any female.. apparently they are a wee bit promiscuous :)

Show you a few more tomorrow but as we were walking back to the car there was nothing half awake about the many rainbow lorikeets screeching as they flew in flocks from tree to tree, it's a lovely sight to see but hard to catch en masse, snapped this little jewel when it landed for all of a second :) Happy Friday, take care and stay safe...

  4. I'm hopeless in the mornings, but whenever I make the effort to see the sun up I always appreciate it. Recently caught the dawn at St Andrews - wonderful! Love your description of the birds - "in various stages of awake" - and what a privilege to see and photograph wild creatures. Poor old musk duck - sounds like me and my chums at the disco in years gone by.

  5. Hello Grace, I'm going to be paying more attention to my blogspot blog during 2018. I, most likely, won't be keeping my "Out Of My Mind Images" Wordpress blog. Taking care of two proved to be overwhelming for me. Love your bird shots...lots of birding done in Florida. I'm putting birding on the list of possible things for me to do to get me out of the house and with other people during 2018. Will let you know how that works out :)

  6. Fine wildlife photos. They were worth getting up early to take. We have cormorants and pelicans, but only in our summer time. They fly south in the fall for warmth and food.

  8. You can't beat early morning for seeing plenty of birds. Still very dark here till nearly 8am, so easy to get up in time for the sunrise.

  11. It looks so peaceful (apart from the lorikeets). I've never been much of an early morning person but I wish I was. As you say, it's a wonderful time of day.

  14. Best time to watch the birds is early morning. Nice photos Grace. Some remind me of Florida, but in summer even 05:30 can be hot and humid.

  15. What did P have to bribe you with to get you out of bed so early? If I look at cormorants it is usually the times when there have their wings spread, not with their heads tucked under their wings.

  16. Early mornings are often the best, Grace. Wonderful to see so many cormorants together!

  18. I certainly have fond memories of that lake, Grace, and aww, great shots.
    love the last shot most.
I leave the house a tad later now, by 05:40. In the shivering dark and hope to get up for a work-purpose that early still when summer is back!
