Curiouser and curiouser!

Passing through the suburb of Herdsman a few days ago P mentioned a curious sculpture he had spotted sitting on an island in the middle of Herdsman Lake. We were too close to let a 'peculiar' photo opp slip by :) He wasn't wrong! I couldn't get close enough to see if there was an inscription but Google was a fund of information. I'm sure you will be as astounded as moi when you read where it was originally!

Created by Italian born Pietro Porcelli, the central figure in the group the goddess of Peace and Plenty, the male figure of Labour sits to her left, while the figures of the wife and child sit on her right. If you scroll down here you will see the sculpture in its original pristine condition and if you check out the site history here (interesting story) you will see how the sculpture, once sitting proudly atop the old AMP building, demolished in the 70's, sits now rather forlornly here in the middle of the lake..

But even more curious.. did you notice? Even though the lake is a freshwater lake there was not one bird to be seen! Birds twittering in the surrounding trees but not a one on the water.. believe me when I say that is odd, most water areas in Perth are alive with take-offs and landings of the feathered kind.. curious much! Happy Monday, take care and stay safe.. P.s. I have the day all to myself today, time to catch up!

  1. It is good the work was saved and not discarded. Curious about the absence of birds.

  6. Pretty typical 19th Century statuary but a strange story. It's as if the officials couldn't force themselves to junk it but, not really liking it, put it someplace as obscure as possible.

  11. At least they gave a new place and have not put it away in a storage as here often happens.

  14. I rather like the fact that it sits on an island in the middle of water. In fact, if I was a statue, I'd like to do that too.

  15. What a strange place for the statue to end up, thanks for sharing the story. Wat no birds! Hope you had a good Eater. Diane

  16. Fascinating post. I think it's rather cool out there on that island...it certainly attracted your attention and probably will attract more attention that if it was in some public square where such things commonly go unnoticed. :)

  20. So interesting, Gracie. You both have a knack for finding unusual stuff. We drive by this lake often and never knew there was a huge statue there!
