Bit of a brute!!

I've been thinking a lot about architecture lately and while the loved and restored buildings of the late 18 early 1900's are visually and emotionally more pleasing to the eye and the soul what if the world was deprived of the imagination of architects like Canadian born architect Frank Gehry. Oh la, incroyable! As far as I know Sydney's Chau Chak Wing Building is the only Gehry in Australia, I'm sure we would make M. Gehry very welcome in Perth :)

While the Telstra Exchange building on Wellington St. constructed in 1975/78 in the brutalist design which sees heavy use of concrete is not a favourite it is 'purpose built to the requirements needed to regulate and maintain the internal temperature of the building'. As much as I love heritage buildings, and you know I do :) a street composed of multiple architectural designs surely has to be more interesting oui! I missed the open house here last year, hope it's on the list this year, I'd like to see what's behind this stern exterior :) Happy Thursday, take care and stay safe... p.s. in no way am I comparing this to a Frank Gehry creation :)

  1. Very imposing. Some of that architecture turns up here as well.

  2. Very interesting views which I agree with. That 'brutalist' building reminded me of a couple of 70's ones in Honolulu actually....

  3. The concrete seems to fare better in the sunny climes of Perth than it does anywhere in Britain, where it always looks very tired and stained within a few years.

  5. There are a few Brutalist buildings here that I love but many look so dreary. This one looks not bad, Grace!

  6. Lucky you to have a real Frank Gehry in town! I have seen several buildings of him an I love them but not in the Netherlands.

  7. That certainly is a big hulk of a building! It kind of reminds me of one built here only ours has windows. However, our telecommunications building in downtown does not have any windows for exactly the same reason.

  8. The merits of brutalist architecture is very divisive. Within the building you will find lots of ladies with nicely painted nails, sitting at panels and saying 'putting you through now caller'.

  9. This is a phenomenal bit of architecture. I am not a modernist at all, but buildings like this one really do excite me. It is one real beauty. genie

  12. Some new buildings are beautiful and some should never have been built. Can't say the Telstra building moves me.

  14. Brutalism was not one of the high points of architecture. This one is not so bad, though.
