Iris Metropolitan.....

I can't be sure, but this piece of public art titled 'Iris Metropolitan' may or may not be named after the goddess Iris. According to Greek mythology Iris was 'one of the goddesses of the sea and the sky, traveling with the speed of the wind from one end of the world to the other'. She does look like she's about to set off on such a trip! We'll never know for sure unless there's a Perthite out there who can clarify, as with a lot of the public art in cities, it's hard to uncover the finer details, very unsatisfying don't you think? Whoever it is that she represents, she does it very gracefully.....
This shot is to give you some idea of where she sits on Walcott Street, a busy spot in Mount Lawley one of Perth's oldest, therefore trendiest and more expensive suburbs. It hadn't really registered before just how many of the buildings along Beaufort and Walcott street are in the art deco style, I didn't have time yesterday but will revisit and take some shots soon. Happy Thursday, take care and stay safe.....

  1. Graceful figure, she looks as though she might take off at any moment. I'm not so enamoured of the building she's attached to.

  2. Very Art-Deco, reminds one of the Rolls-Royce hood ornament, Spirit of Ectasy.

  10. Wouldn't it be wonderful to be able to travel around the world with the speed of the wind whenever you wanted? I wonder if someday we could be "beamed" to a new location like they do on Star Trek.

  14. I've never seen anything quite like this on a building, but I like it a lot! And I agree that Perth is a very special place and I can understand why many folks want to berth in Perth.

Re your comment on The Villages: While we don't live in The Villages (we live in Ocala, about 30 miles north), you hit the nail on the head. Each of the downtowns is very much like movie a set! I suppose this new one, with the western theme, is even more so.

  15. I live in a metropolitan area, too. And I´m (sadly) sure my name is not chosen after that goddess (aww, that would be an inspiration!) but after the circular structure in the eye, my Father was an optometrist...
Thanks for giving a different idea to this name.

  18. Please do take photos of art deco buildings. Seems odd to have an inner suburb with the name Mount something.

  25. What a great piece of art, she really does look like a goddess of the sea and the sky. And she is emerging from an Iris stem just as the real plant does. [Coincidentally, the iris in our garden came out in style last week.]
