Gothic details...

St. Mary's Cathedral was built in three stages, the first from when it was blessed and opened in 1865 to 1930.  The 'Gothic' details here were added in the second stage 1930 - 1999.
Thought it looked pretty nice with the glow from the sun behind..

During the third stage, 1999 to present day.. on the new addition to the cathedral a second spire was added, a spire 'not identical to the original spire because of a Heritage Council stipulation that the new spire not "shamelessly mimic" the existing one' .. no chance of that :) Happy Sunday, take care and stay safe.. p.s. big day yesterday, catch up today..

  1. I prefer the older sections... quite a contrast with the more recent addition!

  3. In some ways, it looks more like a castle than a church!

  5. Odd to add the Gothic details at that time; Gothic being in vogue in the late nineteenth century and seriously unfashionable by 1930. The modern addition is rather splendid to my eye.

  7. Wow, almost as beautiful as my beloved St. Mary's in Sydney. Anything Gothic is wonderful. Strange about that, saying no to "shamelessly mimic" the first spire.

P.S. Thanks for your questions about my hermitage. They made me think (AND answer).

  9. Perhaps they did not want the new spire to take a hundred years to build. I do like the contrast of the old and the new. Makes for a very interesting building.

  10. Certainly does not mimic the old but I would rather see it like that than a poor attempt to 'blend' with the old.

  11. Nope. Certainly no mimicry here.

  13. May all your buttresses be flying.

Not sure how well the two parts work together. I'd have to see it in person.

  14. That's weird not being able to mimic the old style. It would look better i reckon.

  15. Look for the doors and you can often get inside and look around...

  19. It looks like such a massive structure and the time period of construction worked out just fine. It is a magnificent looking building.
