Drama at sea!

Well not so much a drama, more of a banishment.. maybe not so much of a banishment as a 'you can't come in yet' :) Don't let the glimpse of blue sky above fool you, the wind nearly blew me off my feet more than once! It was the perfect kind of day to head down to Fremantle Harbour to see how the ships in the harbour were coping with the wild weather. Driving out onto the South Mole we were just in time to see three harbour tugs re-entering the harbour after stopping a huge container ship coming in from Gage Roads from entering Victoria Quay..

Below, this is where the ocean and myself merged.. thinking we were far enough from the edge a ginormous wave crashed off the rocks drenching myself and a lady standing beside me.. was fairly exhilarating 🌊

Below the tugs heading back into the harbour to await further instructions.. you can see that the harbour has many massive vessels in dock already..

Not sure why the container ship was turned away, the sea may have been too rough or perhaps there was no room at the inn. Whatever the reason there it is below heading back from whence it came. Despite getting soaked by a less than friendly Indian Ocean the trip to Freo, as always, was a fund of photos. Happy Monday, take care and stay safe.. P.s. I should have tied my hair up :)

  1. Great post, Grace. You caught very well the chaos that sea can impose on ships and tugs and other vessels when it so desires. This reminds me a lot of the entrance to the harbor at Fort Lauderdale...we would go out and sit on the rock jettys and watch the big ships navigate a relatively narrow channel with the help of the tugs. Good times! Sorry you got so wet!

  2. Rough waters are always a challenge. I miss watching the ships on the bay and river from when I lived in Virginia.

  4. Just a perfect day to catch the ferry to Rottnest Island. Pity no one was photographing you when you were drenched.

  7. A green lighthouse is a new one for me, though I like it. I wouldn't do well at sea. I get too sick!

  8. The area was quite busy. It must we rough on those ships! I fear I’d be sick!

  10. Your last photo is so funny...and it tops a great series. The weather does look very wild; I'm always impressed with how well tugs do with those kinds of swells. I'm glad you only got wet. Seas like that can sometimes sweep people away and swallow them up completely.

  11. As so often, Grace, you managed to make me laugh, thank you :-)
Here not the slightest wind or drop of rain, but sun, sun, sun :-)

  12. What you all do for us to make a photo. Drenched by a gulf all for us! Thank you for that:)

  13. Oh my gosh, I can see from the white caps how rough it was. This is so interesting to see especially for someone who doesn't see marine activity very often. The only thing stopping shipments into the Phoenix area are dust storms. When that happens, the big trucks get sidelined.

  14. I love lighthouses and am so very sorry that so many of them are no longer used. going up and living near two Great Lakes gave me an appreciation for their history. The sea in the photos look very choppy and potentially dangerous.

  15. Great photos Grace, I'm glad you didn't get swept away. I always have a few trips to the harbour when I visit Freo but I've never been at this time of year so haven't witnessed such wild weather. The lighthouse is lovely.

  16. Lovely photos but I do hate wind. My eyes just stream and I can hardly see what I am doing let alone focus on the camera. Have a good week Diane

P.S. By the way I made some elderflower cordial and I have been drinking it, think the cough is a little better ! Soon as the berries arrive I will also try elderberry syrup.

Hope you don't get a cold from the drenching.
