E.L.K in Wolfe Lane...

If like me you had no idea of the complexity of stencil street art check out this video of Australia's Luke Cornish aka E.L.K creating his portrait of Father Bob Maguire earning him a spot as a finalist in the 2012 Archibald Prize awards, his 2014 entry is my favourite Aussie comedian Will Anderson, it is complete and pretty damn fantastic! Described as 'the father of stencil graffiti' Frenchman Blek le Rat began painting stencils of rats on the street walls of Paris back in 1981, these days it's possible that UK's Banksy may be the most recognizable name in this genre.. I can see why though, with each new piece that E.L.K's star is rapidly rising.. these two can be found in Wolfe Lane. Hope all you mothers out there had or are having a fab day, take care..

  1. Stenciling rats , I could get in trouble around here doing that but it sure would cause an uproar in the town that thinks it is an art city.

  4. It's a great street art technique. E.L.K seems to master it well.

  5. Brilliantly done but I'd find them uncomfortable to live around. Although these graphics are much more sophisticated, they remind me of what I saw on the walls of Belfast a few years ago.

  12. I am afraid that I don't like the way the mural artists of these days are picking their subjects to show. All gloom and doom. No hope for mankind whatsoever. But thanks to the stencil method easy to repeat on every corner of the street. In the case of Banksy there is still a lot of humor. Not here. But thanks for showing us.

  15. Mostly interesting! I suppose these can also be considered "alternative" art...and I often wonder why such talented folks don't use canvas or other materials to express themselves. That way if I wanted to look at their work I could go to a museum or a gallery and have the option of looking at it or not. :)

  16. Grace, you are spot on with these photos. The red background makes the snapshot more dramatic!

  17. Like you, I had no idea of all the layers that go into stencils. I think I'm used t o seeing flatter, less nuanced stencil art. ELK seems to me to be quite gifted. Artists perceptions are so different from my own Thanks for contributing to this week's Monday Mural.
