It's the little differences!

The difference between a parasol and an umbrella may be confusing today but back in Victorian times it was clear and unquestionable to society that 'a woman who carried an umbrella was admitting publicly that she could not afford to own or hire a carriage for transportation when it was raining.. but a woman with a parasol was most assuredly a lady, she carried it in fair weather not in foul'. They had some peculiar ideas those Victorians :) here in Perth on a 37C day as it was yesterday, anything that keeps the sun sur la tête is just fine, although there are brollies and then are umbrellas, below, that a Victorian lady would be pleased to show off :) Cooler today with the chance of rain, hallelujah! Happy Sunday, take care and stay safe...

  1. I didn't know the difference!

Here it has gotten colder and the snow seems well settled in for the winter.

  2. A very pretty and ladylike green umbrella.

  3. 37 degrees, lucky you. In summer I saw some Asian tourists here with an umbrella, that is a bit over the top for our summers which are not so sunny and hot! :-)

  4. I prefer Mary Poppins, Bumpershoot.

Easy though. An umbrella -- plain, simple, keep dry. Parasol -- fancy, something one would not want to get wet.

I like the old photos of the Victorian era parasols. Very ornate.

    Happy Sunday!

  5. I love that parasol, but the umbrella is more useful!

  6. I guess summer is in full swing now Grace. It's hot! An umbrella wouldn't work here unless you want to have it inside out all the time. :)

  7. I think both umbrellas and parasols serve the same function, but if you want to be fancy pantsy, go with the parasol, like that beauty the woman is carrying in the 2nd photo! Love it!

  8. We use such parasols also...to keep the sun off!

  9. They have become more & more common here in the hot summer, Grace. That little bit of shade does make a huge difference!

  10. That very much looks like a parasol, although the fabric is light and looks like it would still allow rays to penetrate.

  11. Sorry to hear of your heat wave. We could use a bit of that now as we are having snow and near 0 F temperatures. Have not been out of the house in two days. Did not know about the difference between an umbrella and a parasol.

  12. Oh yes, that one in the second photo is my favorite! This post really hits home. I see lots of people out walking about carrying umbrellas to protect from that fierce sun here in the desert. We rarely see rain but that relentless sun is always present.

  13. 37C is 31C more than we have today :)
What a fantastic artistic green umbrella the Lady has got.
Enjoy the rest of the weekend too.

  14. That is a pretty green umbrella Grace! I've lived in Florida all my life and the sun and heat can be relentless, but the only people I have ever seen carrying an umbrella when it is not raining are tourists.
