The Elephant & Wheelbarrow and other weird pub names!

Thank heavens for archive shots! At 41C yesterday it was a wee bit hot to get out and about with camera in hand. I took these a few weeks ago in Northbridge. After perusing the 23 weirdest pub names in Britain list, with 'The Bucket of Blood' (?) in Cornwall coming in at number one, The Elephant & Wheelbarrow above, seems to almost make sense :) not really! The 'pairing of words in the names of pubs/inns in Britain was rare in the mid-17th century' then apparently after that it was game on, the odder the pairing the better!

Meanwhile below in a heritage listed building in Northbridge there's the Hotel Northbridge.. nothing puzzling about that one :) Looking forward to getting out and about on a hopefully cooler day, have a good Wednesday, take care and stay safe... p.s. what is the weirdest pub name you've come across in your travels?

  1. Back in the day when they come up with the name, they must have been thinking, "what's the weirdest combination name we can think of for this place?"

  3. Ha! Well, it really is a name one is likely to remember. Good marketing strategy. ;)

  4. It's a nice looking pub isn't it? I'm thinking that the wheelbarrow is used to collect all of the **** left by the elephant :)

  5. Oh, yes!! I do agree with EG!!! I won't forget that one and great marketing strategy indeed!! Hope you have some cooler weather!! Wish I could send you some of ours -- it's been awesome for this time of year in Oregon!!!

  6. I have a pub shot tomorrow with a rather 'regular' name of The Rainbow. You made me smile...the names do get a bit out there over here. Nice shots.

  7. I can't remember. Now why can't I remember any weird pub names offhand? The elephant and the wheelbarrow makes total sense to me!

  8. Here , the most famous pubs of the city are called " Wayne's ", "Big Ben " , "Whales" and "the Klumb". Nothing special , except that those are English names !

  9. There is one here called The Dog's Bollocks which always gives me a chuckle, Grace! ;-)

  11. While not so unusual, The Pig and Whistle as a pub name has always intrigued me.

  12. How cool! It's so much fun checking out places with strange names, and especially why they got that name very often! Now I'm a bit thirsty too! :)

  13. That's a great looking pub but, I agree the name is funny. Makes me wonder if someone actually tried to move an elephant with a wheelbarrow. I once saw one in London named The Walrus and the Carpenter. That's a strange combination.

  15. I love the name. My daughter and I ate at the Bag O Nails Pub on Buckingham Palace Road near Victoria Station in London last summer. It was our first of several pub experiences in England and we thoroughly enjoyed it!

  18. 41! I think that's maybe happened once since I lived here.

I know Elephant & Castle but not Elephant & Wheelbarrow.

  19. "The Elephant and the Wheelbarrow". I now have this vision of an elephant crammed into a wheelbarrow in my mind and it brings a smile to my face.

  21. For me who have never been to Australia, the top building looks very British, and the other one very American. I guess you have as many different styles as most other countries have

    Strange names:)

  22. Sorry, I can't remember any name of a pub, I don't notice them.

  23. Wish I'd noted the name of every pub I've ever been in. There's a 'Crown Posada' in Newcastle upon Tyne, which I reckon is unique. Then my favourite fictitious pub, to which I repair for the odd ale or three, is the 'The Olde Ruptured Duck'.

  24. I love that first one! It reminds me of a restaurant here--The Fatted Calf. It closed recently, but had been around since my college days. Inside and out, it looked like an English pub.

Hope to see you on my blog :)

  26. Hey! Where'd your "Lady in the Yellow Bikini" go? Was going to express my jealousy for your beach weather. Meanwhile, the shopping center in the first couple of photos reminds me of a place in the central coast of California called Solvang.
