Charles Bukowski hates you, or.. l'importance de pain!.....

You'll have to look for this one..give you a clue, to the left! At first I couldn't think who Charles Bukowski was, but on reading some of his quotes I found I did recognize his unique (?) style of writing. Anyway this post isn't about Mr. Bukowski it's about l'importance de pain! True story..when I was in France a few years ago with my French amie Marie, we were sitting one morning around the breakfast table with her family and friends, moi being the only 'personne non-Français'. During a heated discussion most of which I didn't understand the words le pain, le pain came up several times..after a while I looked up from my croissant :) and asked, have you really been talking about bread for the last half an hour? With a classic French shrug she replied  'Ah oui, le pain est plus important n'est-ce pas?' Everytime I pass by a boulangerie I think of that moment and smile. I hope something makes you smile this weekend, enjoy and take care.....

  1. We all need all the smiles we can get these days and you always furnish some delightful ones! Great shot for the day and I do love "pain" in any language! I would have been happy to have some this morning! I guess I'd better plan to visit the "boulangerie" today!! Have a great weekend with lots of smiles!!

  3. Heehee, what could be more important that delicious bread!:) I love the picture and those delicious looking loaves. In college, there was a chain of affordable cafes called "Au Bon Pain," simplified in campus lingo to "The Pain" (Wanna meet at The Pain? I'm grabbing lunch - want anything from The Pain?)

  5. Oh I love bread, the smell of fresh bread is the best smell of all. This looks very good. I only had no clue what you meant with Charles Bukowski?? Can't find any sign of him in your picture.

  6. I think I see one of those items on the pole with a scrawl of writing that might be it....

Fresh baked bread is always welcome!

  8. What's one of the most common signs you see in France? Prix de pain. It's a weighty subject.

  9. Mmmmm the smell of bakeries is mouthwatering. I can believe that the French could discuss "le pain" for ages. After all they are the best bakers in the world. We once sat in a parked bus outside a bakery in France and we started counting how many people went in and out with a "French stick". TOH even made a movie of it. We were told on that tour that Napoleon said that there should be a bakery every mile along the roads. Sometimes we would pass through villages where there was only one shop and it was a bakery.

  11. And after they talked about bread, did they begin talking about cheese?

And then, did they talk about wine? Now that is a conversation I might have enjoyed.

  12. It took me ages to see the sticker Grace! Lovely reflections.
The French have it spot on - bread is wonderful stuff. When we lived in Cognac we'd by our daily "Flute" (a large baguette) and by the time we got back to the car, half of it had been eaten!

  16. Grace! :-)
That´s what we missed in Australia: Bread. In the Asherton Tablelands we found a Coles that had a French Bakery and they had "petit pain", that was just like German breadrolls. We stayed an extra day in that little place just for that.
Every Saturday we drive some 5 km to our bakery to get bread - our bread.

Just sad it reads "pain" cause le pain isn´t a pain, only if it´s not good ;-)
Germany has some 800 sorts of bread - bread is life :-)
    Have a great weekend!

  27. I agree; bread is an important topic and often yields great results but only if you don't loaf around.
