BR, before ROA ...!

The original graffiti artist. The Great Southern Roller Flour Mill built in 1922, heritage listed in 2008 is more often than not referred to as the Dingo Flour Mill, a familiar sight to regular visitors driving along the coast road into North Fremantle the four storey high sign comes with a wee bit of history. Rumored to have been painted by Alan Bond, a signwriter pre 'tycoon' days, it was actually painted in 1940 by artist Les Nash who according to wiki was a British racing driver, hmm! sounds a bit iffy to me :)  The sign was painted over during WW2 (a target?) leaving just the faintest outline and later repainted, the whole mill was restored beautifully in 2010 with the dingo now getting a fresh coat of paint monthly, seems a tad excessive, but I guess it does get the brunt of a full salty sea breeze! Happy end of the week, take care..p.s. so ROA wasn't the first to paint oversized wild animals on buildings...interesting oui!

  1. Is the mill still in operation? Many farms in the area?

  6. This so reminded me of the Hayden Flower Mill in downtown Tempe Arizona except that this one is still operating. The one here was closed in 1998 but the buildings still stand and are used for public activities. The city of Tempe is actually looking for a developer who will develop the site while preserving the old historic buildings but so far no luck. I love that sign. I can see why it is a landmark in your area.

  9. Impressive, especially size-wise, non? Craig, I saw Dingos stealing toilet paper from careless tourists (on Fraser Island). A 10-pack it was, I guess.

  11. Looks like your dingo has got ROA beat for sure! I love its graphic outline, very distinctive (and very target-worthy indeed). Hope you are having a great start to your weekend!

  12. I've not heard of Dingo Flour. While I think the dingo is great, I am not sure that it is a good representation of a dingo. There is an equine look to it.

  13. Hi! I've been out of circulation since early May so am getting reacquainted.

Love this logo. We have a mutt named Dewey. He came to us at about 6 mos. He looks alot like a dingo. He didn't swim the ocean to get here but he did ford a local river twice. We couldn't say no the second time.

  15. It is a great icon for the Flour Mills but a fresh coat of paint a month does sound a bit over the top.

  17. Interesting, Grace. Do you suppose this qualifies as a ghost sign with the monthly repainting???

  18. Made me smile to read about "graffiti" being carefully renewed monthly. Makes for a great landmark.

  19. Love this artwork and good on you for stopping and getting out of the car to get this photo Grace. I have kept thinking I should stop for a shot , but then always seem to keep driving in a hurry to get "somewhere"....maybe next time! Have a great weekend.

  20. I think it makes a handsome landmark. Once a moth repainting, eh? The paint must be getting pretty thick. Is someone going for a 3-D effect? :)
