'Laugh Kookaburra Laugh'.....!!

Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree
Merry, merry king of the bush is he
Laugh, Kookaburra! Laugh, Kookaburra!
Gay your life must be...........Written by Marion Sinclair in 1932.

This cute little fella was sitting high in the trees as we passed through Perry Lakes on the home stretch of the City to Surf walk on Sunday (Laughing Kookaburra), I couldn't quite see if he had something in his beak or if it was just a little 'squiffy'.. I was hoping he would make the 'laughing' noise that they are so well known for so that I could include a video, but I think he was a bit 'taken aback' by the 40,000 people passing under his trees....!! The above is the first verse from a popular Australian nursery rhyme (words and music) which I think  is pretty well known all over the world..Hope everyone on the East Coast USA is recovering from Irene.....!

  5. That song is so well known that when I arrived at your site and saw the title of your photo, I was already mentally singing "Kookabura sits in the old gum tree" before I ever scrolled down and saw that is exactly what you wrote. I learned those words when I was in grade school during my "gird scouts" years. I'm not sure why it has stuck with me all those years but, I could sing every word you wrote without having read it first. What fun to see this guy watching the race.

  19. I nearly fell off my seat the first time I heard one in Aus. That and those ibis thingies you see wandering around the streets. Oh, and huntsman spiders... and geckos. It was all a bit stressful, really.

  22. And anyone who thinks 'Land Downunder' pinched the sound from 'Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree' is an idiot!! But that's just my opinion!!

  25. Australia has no shortage of amazing birds, I fell in love with them all when living in Australia. Of course the kookaburra holds a special place among them (sigh).

  26. They´re called "laughing Hans" over here (no idea, why, though, "lachender Hans") - they are so cute in the wild, I had the great luck to see some! Near Conway NP.
